In Brookline Massachusetts a group promoting psychokinesis will stage a mass meditation on May 25 at 1 p.m. EDT to try to prevent Skylab from falling and causing damage. Spokesman Chris Kilham of the Brookline psychokinetics institute leads the event.
The SDN Column reports a frightened home owner told police he was struck in the dark outside his back door. a young officer solved the case quickly after stepping on a rake. Other items include a dog damaging a customized van bumper, Canyon teachers petitioning to lift beard rules, and TV executives under scrutiny as the political season nears.
Western Texas College graduates were urged to take pride in their work without arrogance during the commencement in the central courtyard. Dr. James H. Granberry, orthodontist and former Lubbock mayor, warned that pride must stay in check as others may oppose success. He stressed personal determination decides futures and urged graduates to aim high and relate well to others. ceremonies included welcome by R C Patton and remarks by Dr Granberry.
Snyder Chamber of Commerce retail committee outlined a June 16 Trades Day with courthouse square booths for non commercial booths garage sales produce fruit crafts and church or club use Local merchants discussed a worthless check hot line and a city wide uniform cashing policy plus a possible permit requirement for itinerant vendors.
Readings show today at 7 am 63 degrees after high of 83 and low of 62 with no precipitation. West Texas remains partly cloudy Saturday with scattered afternoon and night thunderstorms possible Panhandle tonight. Temperatures mid 70s highs and lows from the lower 50s to upper 60s.
Ira Hermleigh and Hobbs host commencements tonight with ceremonies in Ira at 7 30 in the gym combined with the baccalaureate sermon from Pastor June Middlebrooks. Hermleigh starts at 8 p m in the auditorium with Mickey Nunley of RS P Railroad as speaker. Hobbs follows at 8 p m with Dr Gil Fleer of West Texas College addressing graduates.
Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby ordered arrest of 12 senators who did not attend a morning session to block bills. Senate sergeant-at-arms provided home addresses to DPS officers to bring absentees to the chamber, signaling a crackdown as debate over a presidential primary measure looms. Names listed include Lloyd Doggett, Gene Jones, Glenn Rothmann, Raul Longoria, Edin-Schwartz, Carlos Truan, and Bob Vale.
The district clerk of County earns $16 217.97 per year. The clerk must be a qualified voter in the county and the principal duties include maintaining all records for the 132nd District Court.
Bostick announced his resignation from Snyder Public Schools after a long career dating to 1951 and later roles as head football coach and athletic director. He expressed no immediate plans but noted possible early retirement amid a district budget showing 1.5 million in salaries for 1978 79 and ongoing instruction costs.
Shriners of the Suez Temple arrive in Snyder to open their annual spring ceremonial with registration at Scurry County Coliseum and ceremonial headquarters at the American Motor Inn. A public parade Saturday morning features sheriff's posses, the National Guard color guard, the high school band and clowns, with the Shrine Motor Patrol from Big Spring among the colors. The event honors Snyderite Jim Simpson and the late Ed Schulz, with about 400 Shriners and wives expected for the weekend, led by Ceremonial Master Dalton Walton and Potentate Ray Robison.
