In Manorville New York rescue teams labored for hours to reach Benjamin Hooper Jr trapped more than 16 hours at the bottom of a three foot diameter dry well. Sand slides hindered a horizontal tunnel as a parallel shaft and tunnel were dug with no water present and his father helped dig.
The Railroad Commission cut June's daily oil allowable by 77 441 barrels to 3 434 618 barrels and set a 15 day production pattern. Industry voices opposed further cuts, warning of market and supply impacts. Magnolia and others urged at least 15 days, citing steady demand and reserve development needs.
Snyder High School and junior high students swept the Dallas State Industrial Arts Show with twelve first places and the outstanding project award. Petitions circulate to establish a Scurry County Veterans Service Office to aid veterans and dependents in obtaining benefits. VFW commander Milton Mapes and American Legion leader Frank Stephenson say the office would serve veterans, widows, orphans, and dependents, with local access to information and advocacy.
Wayne York of 510 Thirty Third Street woke to a bed blaze about 3:05 AM. Fire chief D A Porter said York’s mattress was damaged, likely from a cigarette as York had just returned from work and dozed. No house damage reported.
The Snyder Chamber of Commerce merchants committee met Thursday in the chamber office to plan a special sales promotion on the third Thursday of each month. They rejected a consumer survey and considered Christmas decorations Cotton Week and the industrial foundation. A local observance may be set later in the season. A next meeting is scheduled for next Thursday at 3 p.m. to coordinate support for the Scurry County Industrial Foundation. Nov 11 was deleted as a general holiday. Gene Thompson chaired the session.
A crowd of about 50,000 braved heavy rain to greet Prime Minister Nehru of India in Colombo Ceylon. The welcome drew people from diverse backgrounds and underscored strong ties between India and Sri Lanka during his visit.
San Antonio man John Cooper, 41, claims he was fined 117.50 for wearing an unloaded 1909 Army Model .45 six shooter during Bandera Annual Stampede parade. He says 144 people were arrested and fined over 3000 total as authorities cracked down. the attorney general was asked to investigate. Cooper says deputies pulled him from his horse amid the parade. The Chamber of Commerce reportedly offered no remedy beyond legal representation.
Mrs. Grady Leath, owner of 2912 E Vickery Fort Worth, refuses to cover a fish pond where a 15 month old boy drowned. She says she rents to families without children or dogs and blames tenants for not supervising kids. Stevie Grant, the child, was playing by the pool with a cocker spaniel Ginger when the accident occurred.
The forecast shows highs around 88 with a 66 degree low and a 70 degree morning reading. Scattered thunderstorms and locally strong winds extend from Pecos Valley eastward through the South Plains and Panhandle with fair conditions elsewhere this afternoon and tonight. Saturday expects partly cloudy and warm skies with scattered storms in the Panhandle South Plains and Pecos Valley eastward.
Norman J. Mead, 29, killed in a Bahrein auto crash three months ago, left a will directing five siblings to roll one hand of poker dice for his estate with the high roll winning all. The will also asks for cremation and ashes placed in the nearest dust bin, a remark his mother recalls him joking. Estate size undetermined until foreign assets sold.
In Austin the House Appropriations Committee approved the teachers pay raise bill unanimously and sent it to the floor with a pass recommendation. The measure follows a General Spending Bill approval by both chambers and faces funding questions amid a sweeping fiscal scramble before adjournment.
In Independence Missouri Tomiko Samuel 28 a Japanese war bride dressed her three children for a party. A note and a poison bottle were found in the kitchen and the husband Roy Eugene Samuel III 4 is said to have sipped tainted medicine. The husband at McCord Air Force Base Tacoma Washington asked for a divorce. Tomiko wrote a note saying she would soon leave this world. She and the children are the focus as Roy is hospitalized in critical condition and the two younger children are reported fine.
Washington The Small Business Administration designates Briesast County Texas a disaster area. The move allows homeowners and business owners affected by recent tornadoes and floods to apply for reconstruction and rehabilitation loans at 3 percent interest.
Ground Observer Corps and Civil Defense in Snyder run a tornado warning network. Roy Dunlap says the system activates when a tornado is forecast, with fire trucks and police deployed, radios relaying radar data from Midland Abilene, KSNY as the public is warned, and guidance to seek shelter or drive at right angles to the storm path.
