Snyder highs reach 84 with 51 at night and 56 by Saturday. Northwest Texas stays clear to partly cloudy with upper 80s possible south and upper 60s north. North Central and Northeast Texas see cooler days with possible showers in extreme north Wednesday and highs upper 70s to mid 80s. Southwest Texas remains warm with 80s to 90s and mild nights. South Central and Southeast Texas stay cloudy and warm with 80s to 90s and coast lows in the low 70s.
The Scurry County Commissioners Court awarded a $589,350 contract to Herman Bennett Brownwood to remodel the courthouse interior and exterior. Work will start within three to four weeks, with completion expected in 335 days, funded from the permanent improvement fund and no bond issue required. Temporary county offices will be set up during construction, with Howell Electric Co. and Tammin Plumbing Co. serving as major sub contractors. Other bids ranged up to $648,000.
Five Americans died when a mine ripped through an armored vehicle near Da Nang. Three weeks earlier an artillery shell booby trap killed U.S. soldiers. no ground combat by U.S. forces reported. Saigon says 60 NVA and Viet Cong casualties in a fresh Cambodian drive. Vice President Ky survived a forced landing in the Mekong Delta.
Martine Strubbe from Brugge Belgium returned to Snyder High School’s wedding of Melinda Merritt and Charles Hallmark serving as matron of honor. The couple plans to live in Lubbock while pursuing master's degrees. Martine, now Mrs George Michelt, travels widely and works for a Brugge travel agency, fluent in seven languages, with airline connections and tour guiding duties.
An appreciation dinner honoring oil industry figures in Snyder is set for May 28 at Scurry County Coliseum. Hosts Snyder National Bank Roscoe Snyder and Pacific Railroad and Diamond M Foundation invite about 500 executives and oil company staff. Frank Ikard president API will speak. Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang will barbecue. Western Troubadors provide entertainment.
President Nixon arrived at Key Biscayne Florida for a weekend at his Florida home accompanied by three White House aides Haldeman Raymond Price Jr and Roger Johnson with Mrs Nixon remaining in Washington. Press secretary Ziegler said Price will be discussed with the President and that no major public address is planned for the immediate period though Nixon will speak on May 22 at the Lyndon B Johnson Library dedication in Austin Texas.
Assistant Secretary of Labor J W Usery aims to schedule formal negotiations this weekend as the signalmen union presses a 6 a m Monday strike deadline. C J Chamberlain of the AFL CIO Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen warns of protests if no deal. The 13 000 member union seeks a 54 percent wage increase from 3 78 an hour after a 60 day cooling off period ended.
Sir Tyrone Guthrie eminent director playwright and producer collapsed reading mail and died at his home Newbliss County Monaghan. He 70 survived by his widow. Born in Tunbridge Wells England of Scottish and Irish descent, Guthrie was educated at St Johns College Oxford. He stood 6 feet 4 inches, one of the tallest in the theatrical world.
Dr. Robert Clinton announces Frances Clegg's appointment as associate professor in science at Western Texas College. A Rotan native with degrees from Bethany Nazarene College OSU and ongoing PhD work, Clegg has lectured at Bethany OSU Southwestern State and Vanderbilt and joins with Gerald Cagle to expand biology chemistry and related fields. She will start in August.
