A deadly tornado struck Silverton Texas and nearby areas killing 20 people and wrecking 60 or more homes and businesses. Debris blocked aid as power and water failed and a hospital housed only a few beds. State police listed 58 hospitalized and 22 homes destroyed to foundations.
Violent thunderstorms hit Texas after more than twenty tornadoes killed 20 people and injured 80. The worst tornado struck near Silverton, 65 miles southeast of Amarillo, with 20 fatalities. A statewide storm warning expired at 10 a.m. as the Weather Bureau traced the low pressure system into Oklahoma.
A heavy dawn thunderstorm brought hail up to a half inch and two lines of thundershowers crossed North Texas. Torrential rain swelled rivers, with Clarendon reporting 3.16 inches and Lampasas noting 69 homeless from a flash flood that killed five. One man suffered serious injuries.
Comedienne Martha Raye was moved to Doctors Hospital for emergency treatment after a private ambulance took her from her midtown apartment. Hospital officials would not comment on her condition.
Firemen were called to Snyder High School early last night to monitor a trash burn in the school incinerator. Sparks from paper drifted but no fire spread and no damage occurred.
A tornado struck the Tule Ranch near Vigo Park 22 miles north of Silverton and 30 miles east of Tulia destroying a $60 000 ranch home two other houses and a barn. D M Cogdell Snyder owners report cattle and ranch vehicles damaged as Billy Cogdell and others took shelter in a storm cellar.
A visiting Michigan group observed Snyder schools as they expand staff utilization experiments with larger classes and teacher aides aided by the Fund for the Advancement of Education. The Buena Vista group plans to study the science department and summer work conference to extend this model to new areas next year.
The Fund for the Advancement of Education will grant 27511 to Snyder schools staff utilization project. Ford Foundation supports the fund. The grant funds 24000 for expansion and 3511 for the rest of this year. August plans call for broader expansion including closed circuit TV in science teaching.
State police and Red Cross release a tentative roster of known dead from the Silverton tornado, with numerous identified and unidentified victims. The report also lists injured relatives, survivors, and missing children, including families linked to Amarillo Plainview and Lockney.
Casper Hauck the pretzel salesman received a sentence from Judge Peter Muir for using a rear court entrance. Hauck chose to eat a daily pretzel on the bench as punishment, instead of a $3 fine and six hours in jail. A court attache collected the pretzel.
The forecast calls for highs around 84 and lows near 65 with 68 at 7 30 am today. Scattered storms and strong winds are expected in the southeast South Plains east of the Pecos River with otherwise partial clouds through Friday. Tonight will be cooler in the Pecos Valley eastward.
Secretary Benson told House members that cutting the soil bank acreage reserve risks higher surpluses and costs. He urged new farm legislation and argued for reform rather than scrapping price supports, warning against prejudgment of last year's program and calling for more market freedom.
Overnight rains of nearly 12 inches flooded Dover and Enid in northwestern Oklahoma. Dover evacuated 350 residents as water from the Cimarron River rose over eight feet. Enid reported 5 to 12 feet of inundation in parts. Three storm deaths occurred including a farm tractor accident and two elderly bodies found near Okeene. Red Cross and Oklahoma Air National Guard provided relief. The flood spilled into Kansas with agriculture damage and rivers rising.
The Texas House approved the major appropriations bill 107 to 40 in 35 minutes amid Senate debate on a separate spending bill. Debate focused on salary raises and Agricultural Extension funding while segregation opponents failed to block the measure. The House then set a sine die adjournment for May 23 and moved to address teachers pay demands.
