Washington AP reports that mini sized cars gain ground as gas lines and high prices push buyers to smaller models. The Department of Transportation shows domestically produced sub compacts up 72.5 percent from January through April versus 1978.
The House Commerce Committee approved a bill to waive federal and state rules for Standard Oil's proposed 1 billion dollar Alaska to Texas pipeline. Sohio had said in March it was abandoning the project amid a regulatory quagmire, but the bill would let the president identify laws to waive.
The gasoline shortage spread eastward with pleas to limit travel as May supplies dwindle. Dealers fear shortages through Memorial Day as demand boosts for small cars rental cars and sailboats rise. Californians burned over 1 billion gallons in March a record for a single month marking the 52nd straight month of peak consumption.
The SDN Column notes Snyder Oklahoma City Juneau Alaska Helena Montana and other locales posted 39 degrees last Saturday tying for the coldest spots in the nation. May records hint at unusual weather with prior weeks showing 37 degrees in Snyder and a rain history recalled from 1905. Weather quirks persist as locals compare past and present.
The Texas Senate refused to grant Gov. Bill Clements broader budget control while approving more authority for his office and state appointees. Western Texas College's tentative 1979 80 budget was approved after scrutiny by oil company tax men and Scurry County Taxpayers Association. The plan totals 3 125 990 with 4.92 from state and 32.15 local maintenance tax. potential cuts depend on Austin legislation. Dr Robert Clinton warns of losses if funding bills pass.
The Snyder Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meets at 7 p.m. in the chamber conference room. A report will cover plans for the annual July 4 celebration and the formation of a membership committee, plus a 1980 budget committee and a 1980 July 4 committee.
Allan Colwick of the Soil Conservation Service told Snyder officials at a public meeting that deep creek flood control work would likely start about five years from now if feasibility is confirmed this summer. Review by other agencies and easement acquisitions could add up to five more years before any construction begins. The project aims to control floods, establish warning systems, and possibly relocate structures to reduce damage. Local sponsors are Snyder city, the county, and the Upper Colorado Soil and Water Conservation District, with support from federal and state sources. Representatives from the National Weather Service, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Colorado River Municipal Water District attended.
Snyder Public Schools maintain accreditation per SACS rules. A school with 1000 or more pupils must have a full time librarian, plus a clerical assistant and an instructional materials assistant. Snyder High, enrolling over 1000, meets these criteria, with a paid aide and student workers. Only the junior high also has an aide for the librarian.
Police arrested an 18 year old suspect after a nighttime sniper shot at seven terminal cabs and a truck on Texas 114 injuring three. The driver Kent Burnett was hit in the thigh and cab drivers suffered flying glass injuries. Police said they recovered a small caliber rifle and the suspect led officers to it.
A nine hour closed session yielded 22 indictments. Major charges include 13 DWI related offenses, five thefts, and single counts of enticing a child bail jumping escape and arson. Notable cases involve Cogdell Hospital fire attempt by Robert E. Jones and a jail escape by Robert Vera Jr. Bond amounts ranged up to 3,000 with several others set at 1,500 or 3,000. Public School teachers to receive ten, twenty, and twenty five year service awards at Snyder School with a retirement recognition for six employees.
