On May 15 notable events include the 1940 Netherlands surrender to Germany in World War II and Moscow burning by Tartars in 1571. Other items recall Cape Cod’s 1602 discovery, Corsica’s 1767 sale to France, the 1862 USDA creation, and early air mail in 1918.
Weather reading shows 7 am temperature 52 degrees with highs Wednesday 76 and Friday in the 80s to 90s. Northwest and Southwest Texas expect fair nights, partial Friday clouds, warmer afternoons, and lows around 50 to 60 with highs 80s to 90s. North Central and Northeast Texas mostly cloudy with scattered storms east, fairer west, and warmer Friday. Coast winds 8 to 15 knots shifting NE to E with 2 to 4 foot seas and gusts near thundershowers.
Demonstrators demanded Laos remove corrupt officials and right wing backers. A Pathet Lao delegation negotiated hostage release in Savannakhet as the three Americans remained under house arrest and unharmed per embassy reports.
Western Texas College plans its third commencement at 8 p.m. in the Central Courtyard awarding 119 associate degrees and five technology certificates. WTC president Dr Robert L Clinton will introduce guest Dr Lorrin Kennamer, with Dr Ben Brock and Dr Gene McClurg presenting degrees and certificates. Saigon AP top PRG official Nguyen Huu Tho said the Provisional Revolutionary Government would open diplomatic, economic, cultural and friendship relations with the United States if Washington recognizes it as Vietnam’s government and honors the 1973 Paris accord. North Vietnamese leaders may join Saigon celebration marking Ho Chi Minh’s birth anniversary, with Hanoi’s delegation to arrive for the three day events at the presidential palace.
In Snyder and Scurry Counties supporters applaud President Ford for rescuing the Mayaguez crew. Scurry County Democratic Executive Committee members express full support and County Chairman Sterling Williams sends a telegram praising the action as patriotic and understandable.
U S congressional leaders from both parties praised President Ford after the Mayaguez rescue. Melvin Price called it a great success and boost to the country. Barry Goldwater said it showed strength. Hugh Scott and Bob Dole urged support, while Mike Mansfield and Henry M Jackson praised handling of the mission. Jackson noted limits on authority and cautioned against excessive force.
House Speaker Bill Clayton unveils a revised school finance plan in Austin aiming to win Senate passage. The plan costs about 721 million over two years, delays real estate valuation, and includes annual teacher raises totaling 990 dollars a month after five years.
