The Thurber Historical Association plans its first annual reunion for June 8-9 at the old dry goods building in Thurber, Erath County. The event, merging former local groups, aims to showcase films and photos preserving Thurber’s coal and oil era history.
On May 5 various events mark history from 1940 Netherlands surrender to Germany to 1968 spaceflight news. Notable entries include 1571 Moscow burned by Tartars, 1602 Cape Cod discovery, 1862 Agriculture Department founded, 1918 first regular air mail, 1924 immigration quota law, 1948 Israeli conflict, 1968 Nasir visit to Moscow, 1968 Cooper الفض. One year ago Supreme Court extended juvenile rights.
Snyder and surrounding areas see a Tuesday high of 88 and a low of 57 with a 7 am reading of 68. Northwest Texas expects clear to partly cloudy skies, cooler temps, lows 47–58 and highs 75–85 through Thursday. Northeast and Central Texas anticipate similar patterns with possible thunderstorms tonight and cooler conditions on Thursday. Coastal winds will be southeast at 8 to 18 knots through Thursday.
North Vietnam demanded in Paris that the United States and allies halt all attacks across the DMZ and withdraw from the area. Ambassador Xuan Thuy urged an end to artillery fire and linked the demand to stopping bombing of the North before talks proceed. Harriman described extensive discussions and urged restoration of the DMZ as a nonmilitary buffer, while rejecting a coalition government for South Vietnam.
Sen. Robert F. Kennedy captured 53 percent in Nebraska's Democratic presidential primary, with Eugene McCarthy at 31 percent and Humphrey write-ins remaining. Nixon won 70 percent in the Republican primary, while Ronald Reagan earned 22 percent and dismissed a bid for the nomination. Sixteen GOP nominating votes were on the line.

In Kaufman Texas the judge declared a mistrial today in the perjury case of Freddie Brant the fake doctor who rose to respect as a physician despite lacking a medical degree. Jurors deliberated overnight and resumed at eight but by midmorning were deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict.
Gold rose to a record 40.30 dollars an ounce in London before settling at 40.10 as heavy buying and quick selling surged trading to the strongest level since the free market opened. The jump unsettles the two tier system with U S central banks still selling at 35 dollars. Paris markets mirrored the rise with limited selling and traders unsure of the cause.
Hundreds of sympathizers from Dallas to the Lower Rio Grande Valley plan to back the Poor People’s March in Washington. In San Antonio speakers include Albert Pena and Pete Torres at the Alamo rally. El Paso expects 400 marchers to be housed in the coliseum with a Friday rally led by church leaders.
Snyder School Trustees approved renovating the senior high choir room at an estimated cost of 2195 dollars and hired three new teachers. Bill Bundy will be biology teacher and varsity football backfield coach, Judy Stephens PE, and Trina Green elementary. Three resignations were accepted: Dianne Morton, Kay Echols, and Mabel Brock McCain.
The Snyder Chamber of Commerce board heard reports on Trade Day set for June 1 and progress on a downtown music system funded by about half of the needed amount. A new brochure was approved for promotional use, and WTCC may hold meetings here despite losing the 1969 convention bid. Tours of local businesses were announced and three new members joined.
Pat Morris, 62, of Palestine, was found in the Trinity River near Palestine after his boat capsized and a friend was rescued. Morris had been missing since November and was reported last seen drifting downstream in the river while fishing.
Prague reports Premier Oldrich Cernik says new government will keep Soviet links while pursuing closer ties with West economies. He and Ota Sik pledge freer private trading with loose oversight and eventual convertibility of the crown in five to seven years.
