Washington officials weighing a nationwide odd-even sales scheme for gasoline as an alternative to rationing. The plan, already in use in parts of California, would allow even-numbered plate cars to buy on even days and odd-numbered plates on odd days.
Nashville AP reports Bluegrass singer guitarist Lester Flatt died Friday of heart failure. He formed The Foggy Mountain Boys with Earl Scruggs in 1948, famed for Foggy Mountain Breakdown in Bonnie and Clyde and The Ballad of Jed Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies.

About 400 persons are expected for the Suez Shrine Temple Spring Ceremonial next weekend in Snyder. Registration begins Friday at the Scurry County Coliseum with events through Friday night, Saturday, and a Sunday breakfast at Towle Park Barn. Dalton Walton of Snyder is host, with Jim Simpson of Hughes Tool Co. as manager and a tribute to the late Ed Hultz. The ceremony marks Snyder Shrine Club’s first hosting since 1960, headquarters at the American Motor Inn. A parade will feature the Shrine Motor Patrol from Big Spring, clowns, senior high band, two units, National Guard color guard, and Snyder Gold Coatrs Ray Robinson of Sanderson as Potentate.
Snyder Daily News increases carrier rate by 15 cents to 3.15 per month starting June 1. Increased charge aimed at offsetting rising costs. Other new options effective June 1 offer three months for 9, six months for 18, and one year for 35.
Phi Theta Kappa members at Western Texas College plan a special welcome for Thursday night’s commencement speaker Dr. James Granberry, Lubbock orthodontist and former mayor. Granberry, a 1955-56 Tyler Junior College PTK member, later earned dentistry honors at Baylor College of Dentistry. He has held university boards, served as Lubbock mayor from 1970, and received multiple civic awards for leadership and service.
