SDN Column notes 299 applicants and 107 job orders in April with 61 placements and 46 pending. 265 adults and 34 students applied, 165 men and 134 women. Services operated in Scurry County Coliseum with 25 in service, 15 in construction, nine in trade, five in industry.
Today in history May 13 marks events from 1607 Jamestown founded to 1958 Caracas protests and Nixon limo attack. Notable moments include Napoleon capturing Vienna 1809 and Civil War last engagement at Palo Pinto 1865. Also Lusitania protest 1915 and Italian referendum on divorce 1965.
Snyder area reports high Monday at 84 with 60 low and 63 this morning. Northwest to Southeast Texas see partly cloudy conditions through Wednesday, with scattered thunderstorms and some severe in east and southeast tonight. North Central and Northeast Texas face a flash flood watch with storms shifting eastward and a cooler trend Wednesday. South Central and Southeast Texas stay warm and mostly cloudy with showers through Wednesday. highs reach the upper 80s to near 90s, with cooler nights.
In Austin Texas the House debated Speaker Clayton's 609 million school finance plan to equalize aid. The bill ties aid to per pupil value and raises teachers pay while shifting local district costs. Critics push for true market value and earlier use of property data, amid slow discussion and questions.
Snyder Chamber of Commerce approved a 10 500 budget for Towle Memorial Park Independence Day festivities, the largest yet, funded by a ticket campaign with extra attractions planned. The celebration includes a fireworks display, tractor pull, crafts show, and other events to draw crowds. The board also weighs financing for a new office building, aiming to raise the remaining funds after accepting a low bid of 75 887 from Wadleigh Construction Co.
A cold front moved into the Texas Panhandle raising flood risks in the north central state by evening. Tornado watches and multiple storms swept Northwest Texas with hail and heavy rain, while Lake J B Thomas and Lake Spence saw rainfall impacts and rising waters.
London announced recognition of South Vietnam's new government through a telegram from Foreign Secretary James Callaghan to Saigon. The message said Britain aims to reopen the embassy soon with John Bushell in London and Rex Hunt acting as charge d affaires.
The House Appropriations Committee backed a 405 million dollar aid bill for Indochina refugees amid a rejected attempt to cut to 373 million. Chair Passman defended aid while Rep. Roush opposed high figures. Mahon called the plan an educated guess and urged final congressional approval soon for transport and resettlement aid.
Scurry County Junior College District trustees approved bids for three motor vehicles and paving at Western Texas College. Circle Construction Co. won paving at $29 per ton, total $22,272. Thomas Stanfield bid $5,162.13 for a Grand Fury station wagon. Snyder Motor Co. won a 12 passenger van and a Pontiac Ventura sedan for $4,207.10 and $5,806.33 respectively, with GMC van chosen for dual air conditioning. Other actions included IBM maintenance contract at $5,438.01, nonrenewal of Dr A C Giere’s contract for math and physics, LVN instructor Sandr Galvean’s resignation, fee changes for extension centers, and oil production update in Scurry County.
