Baccalaureate services are scheduled tonight at Ira Fluvanna Roby and Hermleigh high schools with local ministers delivering sermons. Commencement for these four schools is planned for next Friday evening. Additional services are set for Gail Hobbs Snyder on May 20 27 with commencements May 21 25 28 respectively.

A group led by Oveta Culp Hobby applied for a Houston bank charter with capital of 3.3 million dollars. Mrs Hobby would chair the board, and attorney George A Butler would serve as president. The tentative name is Bank of Houston, with 1.65 million capital, 1 million surplus, and 650 thousand undivided profits.
French army reports killing 175 Algerian rebels across eastern Algeria with continued fighting near Constantine. Nationalists claim a raid on Constantine with casualties on both sides including civilians and moslems. French paratroopers counter ambushes, with paratrooper dead and wounded. In Kabylie 20 rebels killed and 30 suspects arrested.
Sidney Hatkin a government economist with pending security concerns was reinstated to the Air Force payroll today with full back pay but assigned to a nonsensitive position. He will not have access to secrets. Secretary Donald A. Quarles said the move serves national security by removing him from sensitive work. Hatkin had faced a suspension 14 months earlier amid Communist links allegations. He had worked in a division evaluating Air Force programs including aircraft and missiles. Hatkin later identified Vladimir P. Mikheev of the Soviet Embassy as the man who offered to hire him to gather aircraft industry data.
An 11 year old girl confessed to extorting about $1,000 from a younger playmate in Newark New Jersey police said. The victim paid to avoid threats of violence after stealing the money from an aunt’s tin box. Over $900 was recovered from the juvenile extortionist who claimed to have spent only $2 on a Mothers Day candy box.
Senator Hennings announces a Senate subcommittee inquiry into the Pentagon security program. Secretary of Defense Wilson is summoned to explain risk case handling and whether armed services adopted the Army's "common sense" rules. Attorney General Brownell also faced invitation as part of the probe.

Snyder city council schedules meeting for tomorrow night to consider second readings of two ordinances and authorize a water system expansion contract. One ordinance would let police officers accept cash bail for city ordinance violations, including minor traffic offenses. The other would authorize agreements with the State Department of Public Welfare on old age and survivors insurance benefits for city employees excluding firemen and part time workers. Southwestern Bell Telephone requests an audience to discuss local phone rates.

In Huntsville Texas a 20 year old Black man Tommy Lee Walker convicted of raping and killing a Dallas woman was executed by electric chair a few minutes after midnight pronouncing him dead at 12 06 a m He declared I am innocent after the sentence was carried out for the September 1953 murder of Mrs H C Parker
