Soviet Embassy regrets intrusion into Chinese territory

The Soviet Embassy in Peking expressed regret over a Russian troop intrusion into Chinese territory earlier this week. China charged more than a dozen local residents were injured, a Japanese report from Peking said. A spokesman for the Soviet embassy denied that any Chinese were hurt.

Sour gas leak evacuation near Canton Texas

Deputies wearing gas masks moved into an area around a sour gas well near Canton Texas to evacuate residents within five miles. About 80 people were relocated to a National Guard armory in Athens with more expected to be evacuated today.

WTC grads urged to embrace ongoing change and growth

Western Texas College held graduation for 124 completing students. Dr Kenneth Ashworth, speaker and Texas system commissioner, urged grads to view education as ongoing personal development not just a job aid. 108 earned associate degrees and 16 earned certificates of technology. Snyder Chamber Decides Debt Payoff and Plans Parking Lot

The Snyder Chamber of Commerce will use 16000 of the 24200 from land sale proceeds to pay off remaining building debt. Directors approve a concrete fill for street access and a wall portrait honoring Noble and Mize. AT&T realigns to unify services under market sectors

AT&T plans nationwide realignment to provide one-stop service by creating separate offices for residential and business customers and consolidating functions by markets. Spokesman Donald F. McLaughlin said the restructuring aims to shift from functional divisions to market-based groups, with no timetable yet set, expected within three months.

Storms sweep North Texas injure and damage many

An AP report details a 45 mile wide storm system crossing North Central Texas into East Texas. In Longview five people were hurt, five airplanes destroyed at Gregg County Airport, and widespread damage including mobile homes and glass breakage. Five more injuries occurred in Kilgore while a man was hospitalized after a lightning strike during repairs. Tornadoes were sighted in several cities including Longview, Athens, Canton, Tyler, Waxahachie, Midlothian, and Hillsboro. Electricity was out about two and a half hours. Counties affected include Rusk, Gregg, Upshur, Harris, and Marion.

Service Awards Go To Teachers

The Snyder High School drama department presented The Corn Is Green before the Scurry County unit of Texas State Teachers Association and Snyder Classroom Teachers Association last night. The event included service pin awards honoring 10, 20 and 25 years of service and retiring staff, with pins awarded to multiple district personnel and a reception in the Snyder High School cafeteria and student center.

City Reconsiders Bid For Tractor In Snyder

Snyder City Council changed tractor specifications after accepting a bid of 13,280.27 from Snyder Truck and Tractor for a tractor and backhoe. An alternate manual transmission bid at 12,534.77 was accepted. The panel also moved to close part of 26th Street and granted use of butane gas in a mobile office. City budget classifications will be used for the first time with the new computer system.

Scurry County Democrats Set Saturday Convention

Scurry County Democrats will hold a county convention at 2 p.m. Saturday in Snyder Junior High School auditorium. Hilton Lambert, county party chairman, announced two delegates from each precinct and said several resolutions on farm prices and federal school intervention will be presented. The convention will name delegates to the State Democratic convention next fall.
