Snyder reports a 67 high 58 low 59 at 7 am with .36 inch precipitation. Northwest Texas sees partly cloudy skies with possible panhandle showers and mild temps. Northeast Texas has scattered storms tonight possibly severe, clearing Saturday with highs 73 to 83.
A night cloudburst inundated the New Braunfels area with eight confirmed deaths in the region between Austin and San Antonio. About 3,000 residents fled as floodwaters peaked, and 20 to 25 were unaccounted for in New Braunfels and Guadalupe County. National Guard units aided evacuations and deterred looting while rivers rose and homes were washed away.
Dr. James Granberry urged teachers at the Texas State Teachers Association and Snyder Classroom Teachers Association banquet to adopt four C's concern changeability communication and commitment. He recalled Lubbock's unity after the May 11 1970 tornado and noted a fifth C commendation for teachers. Awards were given to long serving staff including Herman Trigg and Hazel Hanback with other pins announced.
The Associated Press reports Texas Democrats head into county and district conventions amid a four way struggle among supporters of Humphrey, McGovern, Wallace, and an uncommitted coalition. Uncommitted forces expected to dominate. Wallace backers strong in East Texas. McGovern strong in college towns. Humphrey urged uncommitted stance but some precincts pledged to him. The party’s unit rule is outlawed, requiring delegations to reflect member preferences at all levels.
Scurry County Democrats meet at 2 p.m. in Cogdell Center Better Living Building to address key issues after precinct convention minutes from five precincts were filed, some with primary tally sheets attached.
The Snyder Chapter of the American Field Service will hold an 8 a.m. Dutch treat breakfast Saturday at the Steak House. The local group sponsors Snyder High School foreign exchange students and invites all interested in the program to attend.
The Pentagon reported that several merchant ships bound for North Vietnamese ports altered course due to the American mine blockade. Officials declined to name destinations but suggested some may head to Chinese ports with cargo moved by land routes. Jerry W. Friedheim noted that some ships from a group of 25 may have diverted, with additional vessels leaving Haiphong before mines activated.
Weather bulletin notes showers in Snyder area produced 0.36 inch in 24 hours ending 7 a.m. with Lake J B Thomas at about 0.25 inch. Forecasters had warned of severe storms across West Texas and the Panhandle, but only light showers occurred.

American fighter bombers severed Hanoi's main northeast rail line linking the capital with China in a raid inside North Vietnam northeast of Hanoi. Lt. Col. John P. O'Gorman said the strike hit a key bridge with three or four concrete buttresses and lasted about 15 minutes. He reported no Soviet MIG interception as they avoided the area.
David Cotton is named SHS salutatorian with a 96.12 average, narrowly behind valedictorian Jacque Stehley who holds a 96.56 average and has won a West Texas Chamber of Commerce scholastic award. Commencement is set for May 31.
