Five Drug Firms Indicted for Poliovirus Vaccine Conspiracy
Five major drug companies Eli Lilly Allied Laboratories American Home Products Merck Parke Davis were indicted by a federal grand jury in Trenton New Jersey for antitrust violations in polio vaccine sales to federal state and local governments. They allegedly conspired to fix prices and suppress competition, with about 104 million cc of the 205 million cc produced sold to public authorities under the 1955 Poliomyelitis Vaccination Assistance Act. The case cites uniform bids and noncompetitive terms as the basis for charges under the Sherman Antitrust Act.
