Jacque Stehley of Snyder High School will receive a WTCC scholarship award certificate during a May 15 luncheon in Odessa hosted by the Odessa Kiwanis Club. She is active in National Honor Society, Top Ten, volleyball, Physics Club, and student government, with summer NSF and Bell Telephone related experiences.
President Nixon signed a proclamation authorizing a 15 percent rise in oil imports for the rest of 1972. The daily quota on petroleum and products from the Middle East and Latin America and Canada increased by 230,000 barrels. Latin America and the Middle East quotas rise to 1,165,000 barrels daily. Canada allotment up 30,000 to 970,000 barrels.
In a surprise White House courtesy visit Nixon met with Nikolai Patelichev and Anatoly Dobrynin along with Henry Kissinger and Peter Flanigan. The talks followed Nixon’s mining decision on North Vietnam and amid Soviet criticism signaling no derailment of the Moscow summit.
An aide to Senator Mike Gravel said the Interior Department will grant a permit for the Trans Alaska oil pipeline. The press secretary said the department planned to announce the decision later today.
Miller, a 47 year old former Fluvanna schoolboy, rose from no formal art training to win top foreign painter honors in Palma de Mallorca. He earned the Medal of Honor in 1964 and top prize again in 1965, with a 1969 best foreign painter award. Now part of a premier exhibition circle including Picasso and Mira, he develops "Milleriana" and "Mallorcanism" while planning shows in Valencia, Barcelona, London, and New York. He resides on Mallorca and paints for Sala Pelaires Studio. He is visiting Texas at his brother Ralph Miller's Borden County ranch with family.
Rescue crews in Kellogg Idaho recovered 11 additional victims raising the death toll to 58 from the Sunshine silver mine blaze nine days after the fire. Four were found at the 3400 foot level and seven at 3700 feet as officials cited smoke and gas and communication hazards hindering deeper searches. Mine manager Marvin Chase said the seven likely died while fleeing smoke.
