A TV device to tranquilize telescope images may reveal Mars details and canals. Vanderbilt's Dyer Observatory team described a system that steadies images, enabling sharper photographs from a 24 inch telescope and potential use on larger instruments.
Samuel Stephens, 33, of Snyder and Cameron, pleaded guilty to burglary before Judge Sterling Williams. He admitted involvement in the Texas Co. camp burglary on Clairemont Road and was sentenced to four years. He was returned from Philadelphia where FBI officials arrested him. Stephens faces additional burglary charges in Cameron, Ballinger, and Bryan and will be turned over to those cities.
A passenger plane crashed in flames near Barajas Airport in Madrid destroying the craft and killing all 37 aboard. One foreigner was onboard. A girl in a yard was lightly burned and another girl suffered a knee injury from the blast.
James Teel of Dallas was elected president of the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association yesterday in San Antonio. He takes the helm as the trade group seeks to address lending practices and industry advocacy statewide.
Severe weather from the Coastal Bend to the Panhandle dumped heavy rain and winds up to 50 mph. Beeville, Kingsville, Corpus Christi saw downpours while floods threatened trinity, Guadalupe and Brazos rivers. National Guard aided Abilene families as floods subsided and Cristoval saw flash flood damage.
Gail High School senior Gail Sharp 16 died instantly in a late night accident 23 miles north of town. Four others injured, one critically, including Leon Sharp and James Massingale 16 of Vealmoor, Archie Ashby 15, and Ben Lockhart. Franklin 38? The accident occurred after a high school trip home from a game on FM 1054. Funeral services pending in Snyder.
Testimony before the Senate Rackets Investigating Committee charged Teamsters Union President Dave Beck and Seattle mortgage banker Donal Hedlund with splitting about 11 585 dollars from a fund raised for the widow of Beck’s alleged best friend. The witnesses said Beck acted as trustee for The Ray Leheney Memorial Fund, part of a scheme involving brokerage fees and mortgages sold to the fund.
Wallis Nelson, 58, father of Rev. Jimmy Nelson pastor of Colonial Hill Baptist Church, died suddenly this morning in Borger where he lived. Funeral arrangements are pending and reports say the funeral will be held Monday in Borger. The body is at Minton Funeral Home in Borger.
Prime Minister Ben-Gurion and U N Secretary General Hammarskjold spent 314 hours in talks on the Middle East. A communique said they had a full and frank exchange of views with no immediate reaction from Hammarskjold. Ben-Gurion reportedly urged action to end Egypt's belligerency against Israel and to lift the Egyptian ban on Israeli shipping through the Suez Canal.
Edinburg Edinburg authorities rounded up a group of teenagers after a raid on pool halls in Edinburg Pharr Donna and Weslaco. A pistol several dice and liquor were seized and Pool rooms in four cities were shut down following the raid led by Dist. Atty. Jim Bates.
