A National Airlines Boeing 727 with 58 aboard crashed while landing in fog at Escambia Bay near Pensacola Florida. Three people died and 52 passengers survived largely thanks to a tugboat captain who rescued passengers using his barge. The aircraft rested about 500 yards from shore, in mud 10 feet below the surface.
The SDN Column reviews odd record claims from stuffing people in booths to a Polly Gadsby who supposedly worked from age nine to 95 for the same company. It notes Texas Dem primary vote counts lagging and praises modernization of county vote counting. Wacil McNair notes youngsters lack meals despite mothers present.
City voters rejected a proposal to legalize off premise liquor sales by 805 votes, keeping Snyder and Scurry County dry since 1902. Of 3652 total ballots, 2225 dry and 1420 wet, with turnout highest in Box 15 at 932 votes. Absentee Box 21 favored dry 139 to 291, with Northwest Box 17 voting 100 to 92 for wet.
The blood smeared body of former Premier Aldo Moro was found slumped in a parked red Renault on Via Caetani in Rome, 55 days after his kidnapping by the Red Brigades. Police reported fatal wounds, chained limbs, and evidence including spent cartridges, as Washington condemned the killing as cowardly.
Scurry County Junior College District trustees approved a 75000 transfer from the general fund to launch a building trades program at Western Texas College. Funds will erect a storage building and extend utilities for an apartment complex on the campus. The board accepted the resignation of James Lamb and approved new contracts for Betty Sandel Danny Pounds and Jane Womack. A learning resource center policy was approved and security system equipment for the museum building was funded. May 30 sets a work session on the 1978 79 budget.
A public hearing is set for 11 a m Wednesday at Lubbock on Snyder city’s amendment to its waste water discharge permit. The Texas Department of Water Resources will hear concerns at the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District Office. The city seeks continued use of treated sewage for cropland irrigation and golf course watering, despite insufficient land and storage. Information from the hearing will feed Texas Water Commission considerations in Austin. City officials, including City Manager George Patterson and City Engineer Jim Dower, plan to attend.
Snyder High School presents Emlyn Williams The Corn Is Green on the SHS stage at 8 p.m. The production follows a Welsh village story of a teacher’s dedication saving a youth. SHS students earned 32 acting awards at the state meet, far ahead of peers. Tickets at the door 1 for students and 1.50 for adults.
SUN WEATHER SNYDER reports high Monday at 83 with a low of 52 and 53 at 7 am today. No precipitation. total for 1978 to date is 3.82 inches. West Texas remains fair through Wednesday with warmer afternoons. Panhandle to near 100 in Big Bend region highs, and lows from 49 in mountains to near 60 in the south. Wednesday highs 83 in the north to about 102 in Big Bend.
