Texas Leads Nation With 22 State Senior Colleges
The Texas legislature boosted the number of state senior colleges to 22, the largest total in the nation. A plan to create four year state supported colleges in San Angelo and Edinburg drew opposition over potential deficits. Angelo State College is now the two year San Angelo Junior College and Pan American at Edinburg is a four year school with state aid for the first two years. The House also passed a voter registration bill to replace the poll tax if a constitutional amendment eliminates it, and approved various local measures and a gas production provision for peak demand periods. A Senate filibuster on a shell dredging bill was resolved with a substitute protecting oyster life and wildlife before permits. Also sent back to the House were registration requirements for automobile service clubs with a $100 license fee.
