The Texas Senate approved HJR 1 for annual legislature sessions and $7,500 yearly salaries for legislators with a 22-7 vote, sending the measure back to the House for concurrence. Voters will decide in November 1958.
President Eisenhower said real spending cuts require easing world tensions and plans two nationwide talks to muster support for his budget and legislative program. He noted possible small reductions in the 71.8 billion proposal but warned major cuts hinge on international improvement.
President Eisenhower outlined a budget defense at a news conference and announced two radio television addresses to back his program. He urged deeper cuts only if world tensions ease and supported moving to end broad tax writeoffs while cautioning slow changes to foreign tax rules.
The House Post Office Committee approved a two stage increase in third class postal rates to raise about 128 million dollars in two years. The plan raises first two ounces of mail to 3 cents with a 2 cent minimum, plus a further % cent by July 1, 1959, and may extend to magazines and newspapers next.
Seeping chlorine gas felled eight workers at the Maxwell House coffee plant in Hoboken New Jersey. Firemen ordered area factories to suspend operations as about 70 workers were present at the time. Eight victims were taken to St Marys Hospital in fair condition. Police said gas came from a cleansing agent used in processing coffee.
Snyder Optimist Club elected Buck Francis incoming president with Woody Worthington as vice president and Tommy Ivison as secretary treasurer. R L Blakely announced installations set for June and July 1 start. North Elementary tumblers performed at the luncheon led by Bob Womack. Grady Elder update on Industrial Foundation drive aims for 25 000 dollars. About 25 members attended.
Senate investigators say they will confront Teamsters President Dave Beck with new material alleging he used his union position for personal profit. Chairman McClellan and counsel Kennedy noted Beck will not be lead witness as hearings span several days with six or seven new focus areas. Beck has a new attorney Edward Bennett Williams as former counsel Duff departs.
The London Evening News reports a mysterious flying object outran British Javelin jets over the English Channel last week. It is identified as France's delta-wing Mirage, a new 1,100 mile per hour jet fighter on a night flight.
Oil field workers at four drilling rigs in south Borden County keep 16 pickets posted at lease entrances. Sheriff and Texas Rangers patrol the area as Local 672 of the International Union of Operating Engineers presses for a conference on pay and conditions, demanding weekly days off, paid vacations, safer conditions, transportation, and five man crews.
In Sterling City Texas a 54 year old filling station operator Taylor Garrett was shot and killed by four boys from Big Spring after they refused to pay for gas. Mike Martinez 18 said he fired six shots and all four boys were held without charge.
Vernon moved one win from the District 4-AAA title by beating Mineral Wells 5-3 in Mineral Wells. James Bolton pitched for Vernon with nine walks as Vernon rallied from a 3-0 deficit with five straight hits in the fifth inning. If Mineral Wells wins Friday’s 2 p.m. game, a deciding game will follow. The series winner advances to face the Snyder Tigers, already the 3-AAA champions.
Frankie D. James of south Avenue M was arrested by the sheriff on a burglary charge for a home on South Avenue M. The charge was filed yesterday and bond was set at 500 dollars by Peace Justice W. C. Davidson. James had not posted bond at last report.
The report notes high 72 and low 53 Tuesday with 59 at 7 30 am. West Texas shows considerable cloudiness and scattered thunderstorms through Thursday with a cooler Panhandle by Thursday.
Three Abilene men Cecil B. Roberts 31 Bobby Curtis Welch 31 and Samuel Luther McDowell 32 were to be returned today on car theft charges. Sheriff Earl Abercrombie and highway patrolman Arthur Dyson went to El Paso for the men who had been held there for weeks. They were arrested by federal officers for violation of the Dyer Act after taking a 1956 Ford ranch wagon owned by Otis L. Lusk as a highway construction worker.

Flood survivors along the Brazos River near Angleton and West Columbia report subsisting on boiled armadillo and turnip greens while awaiting rescue. The water rose another 2 inches, flooding lawns of historic East Columbia mansions and vast coastal farmlands. Road closures mounted as the crest neared, with authorities predicting higher levels and continuing danger across the 100 square mile flood zone.
