Seattle student David Cargo, a 22 year old University of Washington senior, has become a highly paid human guinea pig in medical research. Over two years he has taken pills smoked marijuana swallowed tubing and faced procedures for about 500 dollars, driven by easy money curiosity and helping cover rent.
On this date in 1945 Germany surrendered in Europe ending World War II at Rheims. Other events include inaugural presidential ball in 1789 New York, Brahms born in 1833, Lusitania torpedoed in 1915, Rome Berlin Axis formed in 1938, Tunis and Bizerte liberated in 1943, Powers trial announced in 1960, and recent political and military notes from Birmingham Indiana and Thailand.
Snyder area reports a Saturday high of 71 and low 58 with a 7 am Sunday reading of 62 and 0.02 inches precipitation. Sunday highs near 79 and lows around 55 with 7 am today at 55.
Paula Baldwin of Snyder was chosen District 8 Queen at the Veterans of Foreign Wars District 8 meeting at Snyder Post 8231. New district officers include Jack Sea of Breckenridge as commander and J W Whittfill of Rotan as senior vice commander. Highlights featured a dance and a barbecue lunch.

Funeral rites for Jam Moss 96 were held at 10 30 a m at St Elizabeth Catholic Church with burial in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Moss a WWII veteran and local resident since 1957 survived by wife Alfrieda, daughter Mary, daughter Netty, son Jim Moss III, mother Mrs Della Moss and several siblings. He was active in Veterans groups and Knights of Columbus.
AP reports taxpayers pay 50 000 to 100 000 daily in subsidies for at least 20 U S owned tankers waiting weeks in ports to load wheat and corn for the Soviet Union. Officials say 83 ships have qualified for subsidies and total costs will be higher than any estimate.
Two Snyder High School pupils earned runner up honors at the UIL state meet in Austin. Mark May took second in editorial writing and Danny Martin placed second in boys poetry interpretation, as the Snyder team competed in Class 4A for the first time.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear appeals from Texas challenging five laws aimed at limiting labor organizing and picketing in the Rio Grande valley. A three judge federal panel ruled the statutes too broad and biased against the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, halting prosecutions from the 1966-67 Starr County strike. The case raises state policing powers versus First Amendment freedoms and public order concerns.
Special Prosecutor promised by Elliott Richardson as he confirms as attorney general. He will appoint an independent head of the Watergate investigation and seek Senate confidence in the chosen lawyer. The nominee would report directly to Richardson and receive full independence, staff, and authority.
In Guadalajara the Armed Revolutionary Forces of the People press new demands after 30 prisoners were sent to Havana to meet a ransom. Gov. Alberto Orozco Romero warns the situation is highly complex and could last hours or days as officials and Leonhardy’s wife await further word.
Western Texas College rodeo team clinched the Southwest Regional NIRA title finishing top at New Mexico State University with 370 points. Tarleton State 361.5, ENMU 195 follow. Tutt Garnett led calf roping and steer wrestling, with Mike Cathey earning all around cowboy honors as WTC sealed seven first place trophies in 10 rodeos. Bozeman, Mont hosts nationals June 19 23.
The first phase of a disarmament agreement between the government and militant Indians at Wounded Knee was completed. Negotiators expressed optimism the 69 day occupation would end this week as Indian leaders handed over weapons lists and resident names. Marshals reported activity along the village perimeter with several arrests near federal blockades. Both sides warned of possible future takeovers and government reaction.
