Democrat primary frontrunner Connally leads with 391,957 votes while Yarborough trails with 289,085 in 253 of 254 counties. The runoff June 2 pits conservative Connally against liberal-leaning Yarborough, shaping party strategy for November.
Returns from 169 of 254 Texas counties report Democratic leads in governor and several statewide races. Figures list Connally, Daniel, Formby, Walker, Yarborough, and other candidates with large tallies, while Republican counts for Cox and DiBrell trail. Ballot measures on race track betting and poll tax abolition show mixed results.
Secretary Orville Freeman said Estes case is blown out of proportion and that three department employees faced no department favors. He noted the department managed more than 3000 acres of cotton allotments and storage of government grain, while GOP calls for a full inquiry continue.
The Commissioners Court met and accepted a sole bid from T. E. Shelburne & Son for building two 14 by 14 foot rest rooms at Towle Park. The Polaris submarine Ethan Allen fired a first generation missile with a warhead in the Pacific test area, the weapon exploding in the air near Christmas Island as the Navy called the test a complete success. Officials noted the range near 1400 miles and that the warhead detonated in the air while many details remain undisclosed.
Thunderstorms bypassed Snyder as heat persisted across West Texas. Scurry County saw rain mainly in the south and east, with the heaviest 0.7 inch near Camp Springs. Temperatures near 100 degrees, Panhandle storms, and scattered showers across Vega, Adrian, Lubbock, and the South Plains.
Scurry County Sheriff Earl Abercrombie freed a suspect who had confessed to murder in Seymour after an FBI review proved the tale false. The man, held on a car theft charge in Tom Green County, had claimed the crime occurred in Howard or Borden County with a body cast into Lake J. B. Thomas, a lead now abandoned.
NATO ministers wrapped a four day strategy review and reaffirmed their pledge to defend member states by all necessary means. The communique noted US Soviet talks, set up procedures to share nuclear role information, and stressed conventional forces while restricting bomb making details.
Mrs Marshall Formby wife of the defeated Plainview gubernatorial candidate was described as doing very nicely today but remained on the critical list after an auto accident last Friday. Her car struck a utility pole injuring her liver chest and ribs and injuring her two children.
Twenty four states declined the Pentagon’s request for which Army National Guard units to disband as part of a nationwide 475 unit reduction. The Army says the cutback aims to realign resources and improve effectiveness, while governors question the plan and no public show of support has emerged. Secretary of Defense McNamara is away in Greece for NATO duties.
