CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP The United States first space man Alan B Shepard Jr rocketed brief ly into space and landed safely after a 115 mile high 302 mile down range flight The 15 minute suborbital test began at 9 34 am EST and ended with Shepard aboard the Lake Champlain recovery fleet He reported seeing the East Coast and that everything was OK The shot marks a step toward orbiting an American later this year and proves man can perform useful chores in space

President Kennedy congratulated America’s first astronaut Cmdr Alan B. Shepard Jr. on a successful space flight and pledged to press ahead with the space program. He spoke by phone and radio, received Shepard’s assurance that everything worked nearly perfectly, and anticipated a Washington visit to discuss shared scientific materials.

W L Stone of Colorado City was injured in a collision on U S 180 about 9.8 miles east of Snyder at 8 a m. His 1959 Oldsmobile station wagon hit the rear of a 1958 International truck tractor semi trailer driven by Wayne Douglas Cate of Lubbock. The lumber truck was westbound and Stone was taken to Cogdell Memorial Hospital by Bell ambulance with non serious injuries.
In Hin Heup Laos military officers from the royal government and Pathet Lao rebels met for 64 minutes on the Nam Lik River to discuss a cease fire. They could not agree on future talks or on a newsmen open conference and plans for a coalition government.
Snyder and Scurry County residents will view local Civil Defense, rescue and firefighting gear on a 2:30 p.m. Saturday parade. The Snyder Fire Dept will display equipment along Thirtieth Street Avenue 8S to the square on Avenue S then to a dispersal point on Avenue S. Roy Dunlap notes residents are unfamiliar with the gear used for emergency work. Equipment is funded by the city county and Federal Civil Defense system.
In Austin the Senate shelved a fresh filibuster on the University of Houston bill as Sen. Bob Baker delayed consideration until next week. The chamber moved a separate bill making it a misdemeanor to father more than one illegitimate child, with the child still eligible for aid. House committee advanced a teacher pay raise bill tied to $14 million funding, while tax legislation was awaited.
In Pittsburgh Sheraden, a three story brick house fire killed a man and wife their daughter and three sons identified as Robert Warfel 4 Gay 32 Bobbie 6 Tim 6 Marin 2 and Billy 3 early today. The blaze gutted the residence and authorities investigated the cause.
Shepard reaches space aboard the Redstone rocket after a delayed countdown due to technical issues and weather. He spends about four minutes weightless, experiences a 116 g reentry, and is recovered by helicopters near Lake Champlain after the capsule lands in the water.
Crowds on Cape Canaveral watch as astronaut Alan Shepard exits the capsule at sea and is hoisted to a helicopter. He is taken to Grand Bahama Island for medical checks, then to Washington for a hero's welcome, with further tests planned.
