Democratic and Republican precinct conventions met in Snyder County with Shivers favored by Democrats for uninstructed delegates and Eisenhower as GOP choice. Attendees numbered up to 38 across precincts. rules varied on instruction and county delegation.
Two more candidates join the Scurry County sheriff race bringing total to five. Ray J. Keenan Snyder police chief and J A Fulghum building contractor announce bids. Keenan, appointed last August, cites enforcement of the will of the people. Fulghum, 58, vows firm law enforcement if elected. Other candidates include incumbent Lloyd H. Merritt Homer Whisnand and Earl Strawn.
The United States Army in Germany moves to cut 45 million dollars in personal services by ending free maids and other occupation costs funded by West German funds. The step follows a State Department demand and aims to end several thousand free servants by June 30. The action, unilateral, affects clubs, messes, and similar services, while officers and NCOs pay out of pocket for upkeep. High Commissioner McCloy welcomes the move as a substantial modification of past conveniences.
Senator Aiken charged that a Senate Agriculture Committee inquiry found a cover-up by Agriculture Department officials over gross irregularities in government cotton buying. He said the panel would call Secretary Brannan to testify and hand a Brannan affair to the Justice Department for FBI involvement.
Munsan Korea May 4 Prolonged truce talks remain deadlocked over three issues including prisoner repatriation and neutral inspections. An 11 am Panmunjom session was slated as no progress was seen in the secret full-dress talks. UN spokesman Brig Gen William P Nuckols said no agreement was reached after a 24 minute meeting with Nam Il leading for the North and Vice Admiral C Turner Joy for the Allies.
Denver May 3 A strike of the nations oil workers heads into its fifth day with California refineries still operating amid settlement gaps. O A Knight CIO union chief warned of strikes at California plants if talks do not improve, noting reports of aviation gasoline shipments eastward.
Construction begins on a bridge across Deep Creek near the Negro section with dragline work preparing the creek bed for the foundation. Other street sections from the East Highway to Towle Place are also under construction as crews push the project forward.
Tomorrow at midnight is the deadline for officially announcing with the county chairman for political offices. Candidates must file candidacy with the chairman to appear on printed ballots. Mail filings must be postmarked by midnight tomorrow. Harold Bennett, county Democratic chairman, commented yesterday afternoon.
The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 to review the seizure of the steel industry and ordered no wage or condition changes without management consent. Government control continues as wage talks proceed at the White House with union leader Philip Murray and industry officials.
The Senate Judiciary Committee plans Monday hearings on President Truman’s disputed nomination of Federal Judge James P. MacGranery as attorney general after a month delay. Opposition had cooled, but Sen Ferguson may push for MacGranery to be summoned if he does not testify. Sen Watkins also said he will request his appearance.
About 300 delegates registered for VFW District No. 8 convention here by 8 PM. Ed Chapman reported Scurry County Memorial Post No. 8231 commander. Bob Claypool, national rehabilitation officer, attended to assist veterans. Activities begin at 8 AM with registration, 8:30 AM breakfast, Mayor Forest G. Sears welcomes guests, Rev. Ronald Hubbard gives invocation, John Lee Smith to give main address around 11 AM as district business continues in the afternoon.
