On this date in 1945 the Soviets announced the fall of Berlin and Nazi surrender in Italy and parts of Austria. Other notes include the Hudson's Bay Company chartered in 1670 and Stonewall Jackson mortally wounded in 1863.
Snyder temperatures show highs from 64 to 88 across regions. Northwest Texas partly cloudy with late cooling. Southeast Texas and parts east expect scattered thunderstorms today and tonight with fair Wednesday. North Central Texas and Northeast Texas forecast partly cloudy days, thundershowers in spots, cooler nights. South Central to Southwest Texas mostly fair with possible showers, highs in 70s to 80s and lows in 40s to 70s.
J Edgar Hoover died at 77 of natural causes at his residence ending a 48 year tenure as FBI director. President Nixon praised his service and devotion while speculation swirled on a successor and the naming of the new FBI building.
Gary Patterson and Deweylene Stone were named Mr and Miss Snyder High School at a morning coronation in the SHS auditorium. Principal Horrace Bostick crowned Stone who received a bouquet. Both seniors, 17, include Patterson a football letterman with a Texas Christian University scholarship and recent state track runner up.
Western Texas College continues two weeks of dedication activities with daily demonstrations in the fine arts center. McMurry College’s Sherwood Sutter presents watercolor, Odessa College’s Bill Worrell lectures on bronze sculpture, and J. Robert Miller from McMurry offers a portrait painting demo. A UT Austin piano concert, a community production of The Fantasticks, and a Sunday musicale conclude the events with notable performers and faculty from Texas Tech and WTC.
A Snyder Chamber of Commerce event invites Scurry County residents to submit 300 words or fewer essays naming a mother of the year. Entries are due May 8. winner announced May 13. Submissions accepted through principals or at local businesses. judged by Snyder High School Speech Department.
White House says secret exchanges with Soviet leader Brezhnev yield a major advance toward a SALT accord. Submarine missiles ABMs and ICBMs sit in scope while talks aim for a May 22-29 visit. Ziegler notes broadened offensive freeze and clearer paths to agreement.
The Snyder City Council heard Lone Star Gas request for a rate increase but took no action. They approved a new ambulance contract with equipment leasing and subsidies, and reappointed two CRMWD board members while reserving action on the gas rate proposal for the next meeting.
Space Center Houston reports Apollo 16 moon rocks differ from prior samples. The first bags revealed four large dust covered rocks, lighter yet similar in appearance to Apollo 14 specimens, suggesting different composition.
Dale Eldon Miller of Miller's Family Restaurant says he has not filed any bankruptcy petition after reports in Abilene papers. He notes no connection among Miller's, American Restaurant, and Standard Restaurant, and explains he previously leased American Restaurant before starting his current business on College Avenue.
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights reports Southwest school systems fail to adopt policies aiding Mexican American students. Exclusionary practices deny language use pride and community support. The survey covers Arizona California Colorado New Mexico Texas with 1 million students affected. Some remedies exist but gaps remain. A December 1968 San Antonio hearing cited suspensions and beatings for speaking Spanish.
