Waves of thunderstorms up to 55 000 feet high struck North Texas Friday causing seven additional deaths and extensive property damage. A Canadian cold front sparked more showers on the South Plains with heavy rain expected in northern Texas later today.
The April rainfall drenched Snyder and surrounding counties. From April 22 to 7 am Saturday, Snyder logged 4.5 inches, filling stock tanks and boosting Lake J. B. Thomas levels. Severe storms caused deaths, floods, and a Dallas area disaster declaration as dozens were hurt or killed in rapid, violent weather.
Weather data shows highs in the 60s to 90s range across North Central, Northwest, South Central, Southeast and Southwest Texas. Multiple regions expect scattered showers and thunderstorms, with locally severe storms and cooler air moving in Sunday. Overnight lows vary by area from mid 30s to mid 70s.
Four wildcat locations are listed in the Snyder area with three in Stonewall County and one in Fisher. Plans include 6 300-foot, 4 900-foot, 2 600-foot, and 5 600-foot tests across several fields, detailing exact section and line references, nearby reservoirs, and preliminary production readings.
The second annual Scurry County Fair is set for October 6 7 8 in Towle Memorial Park. Exhibits will use the exhibit barn National Guard Armory and adjacent grounds. L M Dawson heads the Scurry County Fair Association and a carnival has a contract for the grounds. The fair catalog is being prepared and should be ready in May.
A steering committee studying a proposed water system has handed engineers a list of about 94 potential patrons in the Fluvanna Union area. Yeats and Decker of Abilene are to map a tentative water line route and report back soon. Around 120 are expected to sign once deposits are posted.
The State College Coordinating Board eliminated the law school at Texas Southern University and the doctoral program at East Texas State University. The doctoral program will end in four months, with current doctoral candidates allowed to complete their degrees by August 31, 1971, a decision bitterly criticized by East Texas State's president.
An F4C Phantom shot down a MIG17 using an air to air Sidewinder missile during a dogfight 100 miles northwest of Hanoi. Capt. Lawrence H. Goldberg and 1st Lt. Gerald D. Hardgrave led the crew. The action follows two prior MIG losses, with Tass reporting seven American planes downed Friday. Ambassador Lodge left for Rome amid Viet Nam talks.
Lamar Junior High Girls Choir wins a sweepstakes award at the University Interscholastic League Regional Choral Contest in Abilene. The Lamar Mixed Choir earns Division II ratings, while Travis Junior High Mixed and Girls choirs receive mixed Division I to III ratings. J. D. Smith leads Lamar. Gwyn Williams directs Travis.
