A Howard County grand jury concluded its investigation into the December 10 fatal shooting of Juan Galaviz by former Sgt. Leroy Spires after a high speed chase. Spires resigned amid claims of harassment and threats. Mexican-American leaders condemn the case as unnecessary.
In Reeds Spring Missouri Rev Daniel Aaron Rogers broke down at his mother's funeral and said his failure to resurrect her was due to his own lack of faith. He sobbed that he would meet her on the other side and that she was his best friend who stood by him.

The United States posted its largest ever monthly trade deficit in February, importing 4.5 billion more than it exported, the Commerce Department said. It marked the 21st consecutive deficit, surpassing October's prior record of 3.6 billion and dealing a setback to attempts to cut the deficit below 26.7 billion.
The Agriculture Department and state county offices prepare to enroll farmers in 1978 feed grains and cotton payment schemes. The plan uses a two step set aside and paid diversion to reward planting choices with payments based on yields and acreage. Trade data show February imports and oil product rises contributing to a widening trade deficit.
In Brownsville a panel of state judges and lawyers began questioning newsmen on coverage of the manpower court of inquiry to assess fairness for the 19 indicted on manpower charges. Witnesses consider moving trials to Hidalgo County. Michael Morgan of KGBT and KELT-FM Harlingen testified about coverage and local viewership.

Voters will select school trustees and city officials Saturday with polls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Snyder city hall, plus three county ballot sites for the county school board, Snyder ISD, and Scurry County Junior College District elections. Contested races appear for Snyder School Board Places 6 and 7, with candidates Eiland Joiner Felan Crenwelge Stan sel, while city races show no contests. Incumbents seek re-election on the Scurry college board, and voting will occur in Snyder Hermleigh Ira. Additional school board races occur in Hermleigh Ira Rotan Roby Colorado City and Hobbs areas, with several incumbents and new candidates.
Texas Industrial Week begins Saturday with plans for scheduling visits to local industries. Twelve five member teams from the Snyder Chamber of Commerce Scurry County Industrial Foundation and Scurry County Board of Development will tour three industrial firms each under Joe Williamson as teams captain.
Visits to Snyder area industries next week will be led by Henry Clark, Ray Engelhardt, Tommy Def febach, Wayland Holt, Roy Kidd, Paul Sizemore, Jim Tully, Joe Williamson, Guy Sullivan, Bill Dryden, Clyde Hall and Bobby McCormick.

Snyder classroom teachers association and Scurry County TSTA hosted a candidates forum for Places 6 and 7 on the Snyder school board. Candidates Jackie Joiner Bill Eiland Anita Felan Vera Stansell and incumbent Ted Crenwelge faced questions on class size balanced busing and teacher salaries. Stansell favored very small classes to spot problems while Felan urged near 15 pupil per class in elementary grades. Eiland opposed mandatory busing preferring local community schooling and parental responsibility for transport. Joiner echoed parental involvement.
