Queen Elizabeth II called a general election for May 3 after James Callaghan's minority Labour government was ousted by a one vote margin in Parliament. Dissolution of the current Parliament was set for April 7 with May 9 to convene the first session of the new Parliament.
The Arab League conference divided as Saudi Arabia refused to halt its vast aid to Egypt while Syria, Libya and the Palestinians boycott in protest for not voting sanctions against the United States.
Boston police say two fires started 90 minutes apart at the citys premier hotels forced about 2000 guests to flee into the night. At least 67 injured mostly by smoke inhalation, with several serious burns and at least two heart attacks reported.
AUSTIN AP The Travis County attorney said he will not seek revocation of Comptroller Bob Bullock’s probation from a July 1978 DWI charge after Bullock’s Monday collision with a pickup truck. County Attorney Jim McMurtry said no one has stated Bullock was intoxicated.
