An airliner with 48 aboard exploded and crashed in a Rangoon rice paddy shortly after leaving Rangoon airport. Officials said the cause was unknown. Witnesses reported an in air explosion before the crash. Twenty two foreigners perished, including six Japanese. The remaining sixteen tourists were unnamed.
A strong tremor woke Alma Ata and the surrounding region in Soviet Kazakhstan. Officials said there was no damage, with the strongest shocks in the Kungei Alatau Mountains about 90 miles southeast of Alma Ata.
