House leaders expect to pass Johnsons broad school aid bill giving $1.06 billion to improve opportunities for children in both public and parochial schools. Debate over extra $250 million for texts, libraries, and centers continues as Republicans oppose the funding formula.

Federal agents pursue fast arrests in the ambush slaying of Viola Gregg Liuzzo, a 39 year old Detroit mother of five who participated in the civil rights march. The shooting happened on U S 80 near Lowndes County as Liuzzo and a Negro youth were returning to Selma.
President Johnson awards the space heroes the Distinguished Service Medal to Virgil Grissom and John Young for piloting the first maneuverable Gemini mission. The event includes a Capitol tribute, with medical officials and Ranger program leaders also receiving honors.

A Nashville Tennessean reporter phoned the Houston tax assessor to confirm the tax rate per $1,000 valuation. After initial confirmation of $370, the clerk corrected that the rate is $370 per $10,000 assessed valuation, noting Texans typically quote per $10,000.

Four men and a woman died when two cars collided four miles north of Cleburne Texas and toppled into a ditch. The southbound car carried firemen Bobby Reed and Cecil Stepp both 30 and 27 year old Ronald Hannah from Godley. The other car carried Lanelle Williams 21 a nurse from Joshua and Noel Beane of Fort Worth.
