U S and Vietnamese forces are experimenting with non-lethal gases against the Viet Cong in South Viet Nam. Reports say mixtures may include tear gas causing nausea and vomiting, and another that loosens the bowels. Gas used from helicopters and fighters aims to immobilize troops and clear tunnels, though masks were scarce and unfamiliar to Vietnamese troops.
In Saigon eight U S Air Force jets attacked North Vietnamese targets in a reconnaissance mission believed to target moving military vehicles. One F105 was downed but the pilot was rescued. the other seven returned safely. Vietnamese Skyraiders led by Lt Col Pham Long Suu also returned without incident.
Peking accuses Moscow of betraying the Communist bloc and shows hostility to Soviet leadership while editorials in Chinese papers call for unity and warn against capitulation to U.S. imperialism. The row centers on Moscow’s conference move and differing paths for global communism amid U.S.-Soviet tensions.
Indonesia appointed government chosen management teams to oversee Western oil firms. Workers of the Communist dominated Perbum union seized Caltex Oil Co. headquarters without waiting for appointees. Deputy Prime Minister Chaerful Saleh said measures aim to prevent interference with multimillion-dollar operations and warned of potential labor trouble. Police and army kept order at the Sungeiger refinery in South Sumatra.
In Birmingham Alabama a sixth homemade dynamite bomb was found in a predominantly Negro area as authorities bolster police patrols. The device, like the five prior bombs, used about 50 sticks of dynamite and an alarm clock timer. Army demolition experts disarmed it at Poole Funeral Chapel parking lot. James Taylor, a car washer for the mortuary, spotted the device.
About 400 marchers led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. resumed the second leg of a 50 mile water crusade today from a frosty Selma campsite toward Alabama’s capital. King noted the crowd would cover 14 miles and the march was guarded by National Guardsmen and a SNCC security detail.
The Texas Employment Commission reports 1964 unemployment at 4.2 percent, the lowest in seven years. Texas population was 104 million with a labor force of 3.8 million, about 37 percent of residents. Farm employment fell from 455,600 in 1950 to 308,000 in 1964 as farming mechanization boosted productivity, with one farm worker today supporting about 31 people versus 15 in 1950.
Improving weather boosts optimism for the two man Gemini mission led by Virgil Grissom and John Young. Forecasters predict clear skies, 68 degree temperature, east winds, and 10 000 foot ceilings for launch day while recovery area conditions remain a concern with five mile visibility. Both pilots, 38 and 34, prepare to test in space maneuvers to link craft and refine orbital changes ahead of moon missions.
Kayla Ramage, an year old daughter of Mr and Mrs George Ramage of 213 Thirty fifth Street, was returned to Methodist Hospital in Lubbock Sunday in serious condition.
Ranger 9 aims for Alphonsus crater on the moon as scientists delay a midcourse burn and plan a 9:07 a.m. EST impact to capture final photographs. Alphonsus is centered between Mare Cognitum and Mare Tranquillitatis with high crater walls possibly sheltering a smooth interior.
The Scurry County commissioners met with Commissioner Bill Herring acting as county judge. They reviewed a petition from Bill Gunter of the extension service asking a $708 annual pay rise for county agricultural agent Billy Roach and discussed the agent’s salary and expenses but took no action. They also studied a petition from over 200 Hermleigh residents to build a Community Center, and considered air conditioning options for the new coliseum with no decision yet. A Board of Equalization hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, June 28. Snyder Truck and Tractor’s Charlie Cantrell applied to be coliseum manager, noting the need to start work with architects and contractors.
Central and northeast Texas report mostly cloudy to drizzle with warmer tonight and Tuesday. North and southeast sections show varying temps from lows near 0 to highs in the mid 40s to mid 70s, with showers concentrated Tuesday afternoon and light rain or drizzle possible in extreme south.
