A fire started in the Snyder Country Club golf shop office about 9 15 a m Saturday and burned the interior. Loss includes golf clubs balls equipment furniture and records. Joyce Schmoker reported smoke and Charlie Bruce noted insurance coverage but personal gear may not be insured. The blaze hit on a day of a men s foursome tournament.
Arnold Lovick in San Bernardino reports a large deer frolicking in his backyard pool caused a delay in his routine. After calling the Humane Society, the young buck reentered the water before slipping out and wandering toward the foothills.
Tunis AP says President Habib Bourguiba remains out of immediate danger after a localized coronary thrombosis on Tuesday. A medical bulletin states he must rest for several weeks and continues to improve gradually.
AP dispatches report that Mao Zedong's army has taken control of farms and factories in Anhwei Kiangsi and Hupeh signaling the expansion of military involvement in the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. Observers note the army acts as production bosses amid resistance from workers and peasants.

Mrs. E. C. Duff of Snyder, gradually losing sight since 1964, received a Braille watch from the West Texas Lighthouse of the Blind. Nolan Underwood, a blind educator, teaches Duff Braille while sharing experiences from his own recovery. Duff can access Library of Congress braille texts via the Austin branch and remains supported by her son Paul, 15, at Snyder High School.

The destroyer Stoddard was struck Friday by a North Vietnamese shore battery 25 miles northwest of Dong Hoi. The hull was punctured 10 by 18 inches above the waterline but no casualties were reported and the ship remained fully operational after returning fire and silencing the battery. This marked the third U.S. 7th Fleet vessel damaged recently, following Canberra and Keppler.

Dallas AP A probate filing followed the death of A Otis Birch 95 as sightings say he died of natural causes in Dallas. His widow Pearl Choate Birch a 59 year old former Texas convict seeks the estate per a May 14 1966 handwritten will granting her all but one dollar to two nieces. An April 3 hearing was set for the probate at Edwin L Davis attorney in Dallas.
Funeral services for Mrs. P. A. Nellie Mebane 80 mother of Scurry County Commissioner Thayne Mebane were held at Union Methodist Church with Rev Jene Greer and Rev Leroy Baker. Burial followed at Snyder Cemetery with Bell Seale Funeral Home directing. She was born January 4 1887 in Hamilton County moved to Scurry County 74 years ago married P A Mebane in Snyder in August 1916. She died Friday morning at Hillcrest Lodge. Surviving are three sons Nuell Mebane James Mebane and Doyle Mebane two sisters two brothers one grandchild and one great grandchild pallbearers were Howard Hogue L L Lewis Preston Wilson Kenneth Wilson Murray Jackson and Fred Davis.
