Washington AP Former Representative Richard T. Hanna the sole congressman charged in the Korean influence-buying scandal pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government. He avoided trial on the 40 count indictment and faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Washington AP reports Senate leaders expect smoother second Panama Canal treaty fight after a close 68 to 32 ratification vote on neutrality treaty. Opponents warn battle not over. President Carter avoids major political defeat as 67 votes were needed.
Space agency officials named veteran astronaut John W. Young commander and rookie Robert L. Crippen pilot for the first orbital test of the space shuttle. In Rome, police recovered a second car used in the Aldo Moro kidnapping case, boosting belief he was held in northwest Rome.
The SDN Column parodies health scares by quoting James Roberts of the Andrews County News and Walter Buckel of the Lamesa Reporter. It ridicules federal testing, cites Canadian rats as frail, and lampoons government overreach with exaggerated examples and satirical dialogue.
Raymundo Fuentes, 13, an eighth grader at Hermleigh Junior High, won the Scurry County Spelling Bee held at Western Texas College Fine Arts Auditorium. First runner up was James Crowder of Ira Junior High. second runner up Kevin Huddleston, also of Ira. Fuentes will represent Scurry County at the April 15 regional bee in Lubbock, with the national bee in Washington, D.C. to follow.
Two alleged purse snatchers and two other suspects were nabbed after a high speed chase ending northwest of Snyder. The incident began at Highland Beauty Center on 40th Street with two women robbed. The vehicle fled at speeds up to 95 mph, debris was thrown, one patrol car was disabled, and two purses were recovered. Charges pending as suspects were booked for interrogation.

President Carter fused a strong defense program with a warning to the Soviet Union and Cuba that military restraint is a two way street in his first major defense policy address since taking office. He said the United States stands ready to cooperate with the Soviets on social scientific and economic matters.
Rep Joe Hubenak told Snyder Rotarians that all food consumers are tied to agriculture and urged stronger marketing of Texas products. He opposes subsidies and calls for tighter controls on imported foods while highlighting needs in leadership and marketing for American farming.
The American supertanker Amoco Cadiz carrying 63 million gallons of oil split on rocks off Brittany France and began spilling oil onto beaches and fishing grounds. Officials warned of a potential record spill as pollution spread along miles of coastline and authorities ordered a pollution alert while efforts to contain the slick faced rocky obstructions and hostile seas.
President Jimmy Carter urged restraint in Soviet missile and force levels during a Wake Forest University appearance. He warned that failure to restrain could erode U.S. support for cooperation with Moscow and its proxies. About 2,000 heard him as a disruption arose when Joe Felmet shouted about human rights and the Wilmington Ten.
