Two Snyder Men Die in Gripping Head-On Crash
Two Snyder men were killed and six injured in a grinding head-on automobile collision two miles east of here at about 1 15 Sunday morning. Delbert Mack Richardson 19 of 2400 Avenue N and Pedro Garcia Villanueva 23 of the Sweetwater highway near the scene died at local hospitals. The crash occurred on a straight stretch near Ezell Key Grain Co as the Villanueva car made a U turn. Villanueva car occupants were ejected. Richardson car occupants included Delores Franklin 19. The scene showed both vehicles on road shoulders after impact. See CRASH Page Two.

Eligible voters include the ill with a doctor certificate and residents planning to be out of town on April 5.

New U S Satellite Put Into Orbit By Vanguard
The Navy Vanguard rocket sent the second U S satellite into Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral marking a flawless flight after two prior failures. The three stage booster launched at 7:16 a.m. and emerged with a precise countdown, orbiting the 6.4 inch payload at about 18,000 mph. President Eisenhower announced the success two hours and 23 minutes later, joining Explorer I and Sputnik II in space history.

Board Names Big Spring Man Superintendent of Hospital
Bill Newsom, a 30 year old West Texas area representative for Will Ross Inc and a Big Spring native, was named superintendent of Cogdell Memorial Hospital by the county hospital board and will assume duties April 1 with a $700 monthly salary. Raymond Duck will stay on until then. Newsom is a Navy veteran and a 1949 Texas A&M graduate. He is married with two daughters and belongs to several fraternal organizations.

McMurry President Dr Harold Cooke Dies at 67
Dr Harold Cooke, 67, president of McMurry College since January 1943, died in his sleep. He expanded enrollment from 160 to over 900, led a $893,000 1952 drive that funded what became Dyess Air Force Base, and previously served as a Methodist minister and lawyer. He married Miss Eric Kimball in Houston on September 2, 1914.

Freezing Weather Returns To Area
