In Bankline near Beirut a machinegun ambush killed Kamal Jumblatt 59 leader of the leftist alliance during Lebanon's civil war. Police reported the socialist leader was targeted after multiple attempts and was riding in his car at the time.
Italian hijacker Luciano Porcari was overpowered by Swiss police after a pirate flight spanning around Europe and West Africa in a Spanish airliner. He fired a shot with a Winchester rifle, injuring a policeman slightly. no others were hurt. It was the second longest hijack distance on record and the longest by a single hijacker.
In Kinshasa Zaire authorities say Belgian weapons and U S medical and military gear have been rushed to the copper province of Shaba to repel an invasion of foreign mercenaries from Angola. Officials describe 5 000 mercenary troops led by guerrilla specialists arriving last week from across the Atlantic.
Dozens of families in Beaumont Texas were evacuated early today when a cloud of odorless flammable oxygen hovered over the area near American Welding Supply Inc. for nearly two hours before dissipating. Police cordoned off a five block area and moved residents away from the tank.

Mrs Noel Browning of 3011 Avenue Y won the past week’s Sizzler contest sponsored by Snyder merchants and received 50 merchant dollars. The drawing occurs Monday with results announced in The Snyder Daily News Wednesday.
The 75 member Up With People cast performed two hours of songs and dances at Scurry County Coliseum to an appreciative Snyder audience. The group, one of six in the organization, showcased original contemporary numbers in rainbow costumes portraying youth in a positive light.
