In Walled Lake Michigan area, a 15 year old boy reportedly had problems with his girlfriend and seized a school bus using a shotgun. Police shot him, he was wounded, and he was undergoing surgery in Pontiac. doctors expect recovery.
Several hundred prisoners clashed with police at Villa Devoto prison near Buenos Aires. After about two hours of fighting, 44 inmates and guards were killed and 30 others were seriously wounded in one of the worst prison riots on record.
In Waco AP reports the issue of legalized horse race betting returns as a non binding referendum in the Democratic primaries on May 6 after the Texas Democratic Executive Committee approved the measure following a petition with 96 000 signatures. Republicans have already authorized a betting referendum for their primary.

Three hostages were wounded, one fatally before the attack. Three terrorists were captured after a 20 minute assault that began when they falsely claimed to have executed a hostage.
Washington AP United Mine Workers and coal industry negotiators move toward final terms in a 99 day strike. Industry and union officials report drafting language as lower-level talks review proposals for presentation to top negotiators. A deal would not end the strike without union council and rank and file approval after previous rejections and near-miss deals.
Twenty students from Snyder Hermleigh and Ira Schools advance as finalists for Friday’s Scurry County Spelling Bee at Western Texas College. The event begins 9 30 a m in the WTC Fine Arts Auditorium with finalists selected from more than 500 participants.
The Western Texas College will present an extra performance of Barefoot In The Park at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Center cafeteria. Tickets are four dollars. doors open at 7 30 p.m. Reservations advised through the Fine Arts Division at 573 8511 extension 234. Tickets may be available at the door but seating is limited.
Democratic U S Senate hopeful Joe Christie assailed Senator John Tower and Republican opponent Bob Krueger for oil industry backing. Christie vowed Texans will reject another puppet of major oil interests. The Texas AFL CIO convention weighed endorsements for 1978 races as Briscoe Hill and Smith aligned factions debated.

With an upcoming vote, backers appear one or two in jeopardy while four undecided lawmakers demand changes.
