Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin vowed to end the threat after a weekend Arab terrorist raid killed 36 Israelis and wounded 72. He ordered a cabinet inquiry into how the guerillas breached coastal defenses and hijacked a bus, as Lebanon targets and Turkish or European reactions unfold.
A scouting exposition at the National Guard Armory drew Scurry and Mitchell County residents. Cub Scout packs 37 61 177 258 from Scurry and 340 from Westbrook Mitchell. Boy Scout troops 107 273 from Scurry and 340 20 124 from Mitchell. Exhibits included pinewood derby races plus skill demonstrations and judging awarded blue red and gold ribbons to multiple packs troops and patrols. Ticket totals listed for each pack and troop.
Scurry County Junior College District trustees approved advancing plans for a new housing project on the Western Texas College campus. They authorized hiring a building trades instructor and including duplex units in the program. The campus site is in the southeast area. The board also appointed Bob Hayes to a mid management position to replace Mike Boles, changed golf fee payment policy to monthly or semi annual options, set the annual fee at 180 dollars, accepted Colonial Motor Co. bid of 1480 dollars for a Jacobson dresser for greens, approved February financials, and scheduled a April 3 meeting to canvass April 1 election results.
A city of Snyder petition drive seeks a liquor election to legalize off premises alcohol sales. The Citizens for Progressive Snyder filed the application in Scurry County Clerk’s office, led by J Murry Bowden. Signatures must equal 35 percent of last governor election voters within 30 days.
Washington AP reports miners nationwide stayed home to resist a federal Taft Hartley back to work order aimed at ending the 98 day coal strike. Early field reports show insufficient turnout for shifts, with limited picketing and no violence as industry and union negotiators press on.
The United States and Germany announced new measures to support the dollar including an additional 2.7 billion in German marks to buy dollars when needed. A high Treasury official said the moves show mobilization of resources to counter disorderly markets as the dollar remains weaker against the mark and other currencies.
Showers possible in West Texas with scattered storms on south plains and cooler temperatures in the north. Weekend highs mid 50s to low 70s, Big Bend valleys near 80, lows around 30 to 40.
