In election year jitters the House voted against a 10000-a-year pay raise, keeping members at 22500. Aimed at top level retention, the measure would have raised government workers earlier. Roll-call drama exposed party splits as supporters argued for economy and competition with private pay.
Two alleged pickets in the Florida East Coast Railway strike were arrested by FBI agents on Thursday night and charged with trying to blow up a train. John Wesley Davis, 28, of Fort Pierce, and Joseph Leo Vedder, 32, of Miami, were jailed in bonds of 75000 dollars each. The FBI described both men as former railroad employees and active pickets during the 13 month strike.
The last witness in Jack Ruby's murder trial testified in Dallas as closing arguments began. Dr Frederic Gibbs, a psychomotor epilepsy expert, offered no opinion on Ruby's sanity. The jury of eight women and four men will decide if Ruby knew right from wrong when he killed Lee Harvey Oswald.
After five hours of deliberation the jury in the 132nd District Court found Pedro Salinas Perez guilty of murder without malice in the Jan 11 shooting of Roy Sanchez. The verdict carries a maximum five year sentence. Jurors listed include J A Dove Carl Brumley Earl Davis A B Groseclose E M Powledge Jerry Dan Craig Bruce Cotton Ted Crenwelge J F Burns Elton Beck Jimmy Cloud and Floyd Jones.
Berlin AP report says the Soviet Union will release three captured U S Air Force officers if Washington admits ordering them to fly over East Germany. The officers parachuted from an RB66 shot down Tuesday. without public admission, they face espionage charges. The U S government has claimed a routine training flight. Washington urges their immediate release.
Elvin Elijah Gaines age 54 of Denison died when his car rolled over into a dry creek south of Nuevo Laredo Mexico. The vehicle plunged about 50 feet near his residence at 2 Lloyd Drive Denison.
In Nicosia Turkey delivered an ultimatum to the Greek Cypriot government demanding an island wide cease-fire and halt to actions against Turkish Cypriots. The note warned of unilateral Turkish intervention under the 1960 treaty if demands were not met, as U N talks push toward a 7 000 strong international police force.
A group of young farmers met Thursday night and organized the Fluvanna Young Farmers Chapter. Ray Herring was elected president with Don Jones as vice president, James Beaver secretary, and Glenn Toombs treasurer. Monthly meetings are set for the first Thursday at 7:30 p.m. through Sept. 30 with a program schedule planned.
Washington reports the United States and Panama have agreed on a formula to open negotiations over the Panama Canal and to renew diplomatic relations. The final announcement hinges on a minor wording difference in statements by President Johnson and Panama's Roberto Chiari.
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara returned from South Viet Nam with a firsthand briefing for President Johnson. He said no official he met questioned the U S effort though the path to victory may be hard, and he and Gen Maxwell Taylor were sent to appraise political economic and military conditions and consider further actions.
Taxpayers in Scurry County vote Saturday on issuing up to 1 250 000 in bonds to finance a coliseum site and construction contract. Polls open 8 a m to 7 p m at 20 boxes including Snyder county offices and local schools and centers.
An editorial argues a new coliseum in Scurry County could be financed in ten years under current tax structures. The project would support a junior college via existing facilities, boost community services, and justify a favorable bond vote tomorrow.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP a four stage Blue Scout rocket launched at 6 40 a m with a gold plated payload but the fourth stage failed to ignite thirty minutes after launch. The package separated and the data recovered was limited as the probe plunged back into the Atlantic after a few hundred miles of altitude.
The local chapter of the American Field Service will meet at 7 a.m. Saturday at Sallie’s Cafeteria. Mike Koenig, foreign exchange student, will present the program. The nominating committee will present its recommendations for a slate of officers for 1964-65. All AFL chapter members and interested persons are invited to attend.
