An overflow crowd filled the high school auditorium for the first night of Seventeen as Snyder schools launch the Snyder Conference on Education. Exhibits in the gym featured curriculum, arts and crafts, and teaching methods while hundreds visited tonight ahead of today’s sessions.
U S Secretary of State Dulles sails to Thailand to announce Bangkok hosts the planned Southeast Asia small nuclear reactor project. He praises Indonesian leaders and invites President Soekarno to visit the United States as Soekarno agrees to consider a spring trip. Dulles meets Premier-designate Ali Sastroamidjojo and cites parallels between Indonesia's independence fight and America's founding era.
Secretary of Defense Wilson told the National Press Club that the United States has the capacity to inflict vast destruction on any aggressor and will likely surpass rivals in some missile areas while lagging in others. He warned no foreseeable development will alter U S ability to hit back decisively and urged restraint on defense budget increases.
Members of the Scurry-Mitchell Nolan Fisher County Agricultural Workers Council met in Roby to discuss wind erosion and soil conservation. Panels proposed methods like organic matter buildup, strip cropping, cover crops, deep soil breaking, water retention, Legume planting, blue panic grass, and landlord tenant cooperation. Next meeting set for April at Sweetwater Bluebonnet Hotel with focus on farm labor and milk cream market.
Three more candidates join the April 7 school board trustee race bringing total to six. Hardy Scarborough noted the names Stanley Noah Gene Best and Ross Hemphill will appear on the ballot after petitions signed by Harrie Winston C V Thompson Doug McGlain Rex Miller and Leland Herod. Incumbents Wayne Boren Paul Keaton Clyde Godwin are already petitioned. Filing deadline is March 27.
A gas distillate well two miles north of Hitchcock blew out today, saturating the ground with inflammable liquid and making the Santa Fe rail line unsafe. Rail traffic halted and Highway 6 closed to cars. Passengers on No. 5 were bused to Galveston as firefighters from Houston and Hunt Oil Co. crews worked toward control, expected within hours.
Greek Ambassador Palamas formally requested the United Nations Assembly to consider the Cyprus crisis at its autumn session. He delivered the letter to Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, noting no urgent meeting was sought. The Assembly is expected to convene in mid November after the U.S. election, with potential extraordinary session still possible later.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Big Spring for Mrs E J Ely of Big Spring formerly of Hermleigh. Aged 87 she died in a El Paso hospital while visiting her son E J Ely Jr Burial and graveside services will be at Pyron Cemetery about 5 p.m. tomorrow Nally Funeral Home handles arrangements with Bell Funeral Home local. Survivors include her son and three daughters Mrs Reed Mrs Blanche Patterson of Tularosa N M and Mrs Frances Godley of Alamogordo N M and eight grandchildren
The first 1956 primary tests Democratic contenders Kefauver and Stevenson in New Hampshire. Millsfield and Ellsworth reported early results with Eisenhower leading on the Republican side. Write ins appeared for Bridges and Hariman, while Millsfield voters noted Stevenson and Hariman on ballots.
Republican chairman Leonard Hall says Vice President Nixon is not worried about the president’s public praise and the “chart his own course” guidance. Hall, after a White House meeting with Eisenhower, says Nixon believes the president has handled the situation correctly. The GOP convention opens in San Francisco August 20.

East and South Central Texas expect occasional rain and a few thundershowers through Wednesday with rising temperatures, moderate northeast and east winds along the coast.
One of two men who escaped from the Scurry County jail last Aug. 30 was captured last night at Slaton along with his brother. Sheriff Homer Whisnand led the arrest with FBI aid and Lubbock County officers. Richard Elmer Crawford, 27, indicted for burglary of an automobile, was captured with Lonnie Thomas Crawford, 27. Christine Crawford, 19, and Addie B. Johnson, 42, also arrested on aiding and abetting charges. The Crawfords were to be arraigned. Richard to face federal court for illegal flight. The roundup involved multiple agencies after information placed Richard in Slaton. The car pursuit ended with Lonnie arrested, then Richard. See ESCAPEE Page Two.
In Nicosia and across Cyprus a spontaneous strike by Cypriot shopkeepers and workers disrupts commerce for a second day in protest of Archbishop Makarios exile. Turkish and Armenian quarters stay open while British troops guard cities. Greece demands U S mediation and vows a general strike. Archbishop Makarios travels toward exile aboard a British frigate.
The Army invites 12 sergeants to join a new specialist group to man atomic power reactors. Applicants must commit to at least four more years, report to Ft. Belvoir, Virginia by April 23, and include college study, apprenticeship at a reactor site, and 18 months of intensive work on the Army's package power reactor with eventual assignment to the mobile atomic reactor or other installations.
Premier Mollet moved to authorize broad martial law powers to govern Algeria as desertions rise in the French forces. The Senate awaited action, while the National Assembly approved the bill 455 to 76 with Communist support aimed at bolstering a popular front. Lacoste expected to return to Algeria to declare siege zones and protect isolated farmers, as rebels widen operations and desertions spread in Rabat and eastern regions.
