Violence erupted in central Warsaw as police dispersed a crowd of youths outside Warsaw University. Several thousand blocked the boulevard for hours, rocks flew, and a confrontation formed around a church steps where youths sheltered inside while police guarded the doors.
March 11 marks events from 1794 when Congress authorized six ships for the U S Navy to be built. Other notes include Napoleon’s proxy marriage in 1810, the 1861 Confederacy constitution adoption in Montgomery, Sherman’s 1865 Fayetteville occupation, Taft burial in 1930, Lend-Lease in 1941, MacArthur’s 1942 Bataan escape, NATO/SEATO era mentions, JFK unemployment stance, Stalin’s daughter Svetlana’s 1960s Swiss seclusion.
Snyder forecasts show 73 high and 42 low with 7 am reading 47. Northwest Texas faces heavy snow in the southwest with 3 to 5 inches and strong north winds. Other areas expect light snow and hazardous driving, with colder temps and decreasing cloudiness through Tuesday across North Central, Northeast, Coast, and South Central Texas.
A severe snow event blankets the Snyder area as winds push snow south from the Panhandle. Up to seven inches fall with two to three foot drifts, while Northwest Texas sees up to five inches in the far southwest. Flooding and hail noted statewide. weather deaths include Gary Van Moore, 15, in Coahoma from a train collision, and Gene Edward Schweg el, 25, in an automobile crash near Comstock.
Romanian Ambassador to the United States Corneliu Bogdan visited Snyder after participating in a Conference on International Affairs on the Tech Campus. He and his wife joined Texas Tech officials for an informal luncheon at the Snyder Country Club and visited the Diamond M Museum in Snyder.
The Supreme Court unanimously upholds a December 1966 federal court order requiring desegregation of all Alabama prisons. Justices reject Alabama claims that segregation is necessary for security and discipline and that such orders infringe on prisoners rights or constitutional limits.
Dr Rex Ryker of Abi lene Christian College urged 58 representatives from 11 Boys Clubs and guests at the 8th annual Conference Awards Dinner of the West Texas Area Council Boy s Clubs of America in Scurry County Coliseum. He cited Perseverance, faith in God, and examples from Madame Curie, Glenn Cunningham, Thomas A Edison, and Byron Nelson to show success follows effort.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk urged Congress not to delay foreign aid despite Vietnam expenses. He told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that aid underpins U S prosperity and security. He defended aiding Asia Latin America and Africa while noting debate over Vietnam policy.
In Saigon the South Vietnamese government dismissed six of the 44 province chiefs in a broad reshuffle deemed due to military inefficiency or corruption. Hue's provincial leader was among those fired. A seventh chief, once effective, was replaced for health reasons after an ambush wound.
About 1000 teachers returned to the classroom in Pittsburgh ending an 11 day walkout. Classes resumed normally though teachers debated the merits of the compromise that ended the strike. The action began over a demand for an election to select a bargaining agent.
