Hoffa Begins Year Term as He Heads to Lewisburg Prison
Teamsters President James R. Hoffa left Washington at about 11 a.m. to begin an eight year federal sentence for jury tampering. He said the government may target others and appealed for labor unity as he was fingerprinted and taken to the Lewisburg penitentiary. Hoffa expressed faith in his lawyers and spoke to reporters on the Capitol steps amid rain. Six others convicted with Hoffa also surrendered to federal marshals after the Nashville trial. An unrelated Boston transit collision injured more than 100 people at Charlestown station when one elevated train hit the rear of another.
