Dinah Lovett of Roby High School and William Thomas DeKnight of Snyder High School won the Midwest Electric Cooperative oratorical contest here Friday night. They earned a 13 day trip to Washington D C departing June 2 to visit landmarks including the White House. Runners up were Betty Anderson of Fluvanna High School and Randy Williams of Hobbs High School. Judges were John W. White Homer K. Taylor and Ken Lloyd.

A BOAC four engine jet crash on Mt Fuji results in 124 deaths among 84 Americans in a Thermo King tour group from Minneapolis. Wind gusts near 70 mph and fog hindered visibility as the plane disintegrated during descent near the volcanic summit. Rescue crews recovered bodies and transported them in civilian and military coffins.
