Tanker Bunker Hill Explodes and Sinks Near Whidbey Island
An empty 504 foot tanker bound for Shell refinery at Anacortes exploded near Whidbey Island in Puget Sound and sank about 15 miles from its destination. Coast Guard rescued 26 crew members, 18 remain unaccounted for from the 44 man crew. Survivors, badly burned, were taken to Hospital No 3 at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. The Keystone Tankship Corp. owned vessel carried petroleum products for Shell Oil Co.
