First Reef Oil Wells of Canyon Field in 1948
Four early reef wells opened production in 1948 at the Canyon Reef Oil Field near Snyder. Sun Oil Schattel No. 1 started a one-well fringe, Magnolia Winston No. 1 reached the edge of the main field, Standard Brown 2 No. 1 claimed the first main-field well, and Lion Oil C T McLaughlin No. 2 completed December 21 1948 southwest of Snyder.

Connally Considers Liquor Referendum in May Primary
Gov. John Connally said the odds favor asking Texas Democrats to place a liquor by the drink referendum on the May 4 primary ballot. Six File For Fluvanna ISD Board Race

Search Called Off For Fort Worth Based B52 Crew
The Coast Guard has suspended the five day search for the Fort Worth based B52 bomber missing with eight crew aboard after no debris was found. The bomber disappeared during a test bombing off Matagorda Texas and six crewmen were Vietnam veterans. Plans also note Lt Gen Hershey will hold a news conference in Austin and meet Gov Connally.
