City council cuts rates for consumption over 12 000 gallons from 35 to 22 cents per 1000 gallons for May through August. The minimum charge remains $3 for 3000 gallons and 35 cents per 1000 for the next 9000. Savings projected at about $27 000, aided by district charges and meter improvements.
City council passed first reading of an ordinance to convert parallel parking on Twenty sixth Street from Avenue S to the city hall and on Avenue R from Twenty fourth to Twenty fifth Streets. A second reading is required before implementation.
State Senator Crawford Martin of Hillsboro underwent kidney stone removal and progressed satisfactorily. He will stay in Seton Hospital through Friday, then recover at home next week, and has not canceled any appointments past March 18. Martin is in his fifth Senate term.
The Texas House unanimously granted its nine man special committee full authority to probe corruption uncovered in Rep. James E. Cox bribery case. Speaker Waggoner Carr praised the move while Rep. Cecil Storey withdrew a competing resolution to maintain unity as Gov. Price Daniel weighed Cox's resignation offer. The panel planned a meeting after an adjournment and the inquiry paused pending decisions.
Snyder school board in a special session called the annual trustee election for April 6 with March 26 filing deadline. Absentee voting will run March 27 to April 1. Three polling places downtown, West Elementary, and Northeast Elementary will serve voters. Incumbents E. H. Williamson and Dr. Wilton Jones face re election. no filings yet. Petitions require five signatures and must be filed with Hardy Scarborough on Twenty sixth Street.
Snyder reports a clear to partly cloudy pattern across North Central Texas and South Central and East Texas through Wednesday. Monday highs near 65 with lows around 39 and 35 to 45 tonight. West Texas fair today and tonight with increasing clouds Wednesday. No major temperature changes expected.
Chamber of Commerce directors explored two major proposals at Monday's meeting. They considered a combined public building to host gatherings and offices for multiple agencies, plus a sportatorium or auditorium. The plan envisions a coliseum with attached offices, and a study of merging the three ideas.
Gen. Dallas J. Mathews told County Judge Edgar Taylor the Texas National Guard Armory Board would start building within four months. The court granted a three month extension on the Towle Memorial Park site, west of the exhibit barn, with a 99 year lease to follow once completed. The project budget totals 120000 dollars and bids were expected within 60 days.
Henry Clois D Henry assistant high school principal spoke on civil defense at the monthly High School Parent-Teacher Association meeting. He described school and individual roles in defense and actions during bombing and tornado events. The group voted a life membership for one member and to sponsor an Explorer Scout post, with presentation planned at the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers district convention in Snyder March 26-27.
The council approved bids including a $1,395 low bid by Snyder Sales Co. for a one half ton Ford pickup. Barrow Furniture Co. won most items for the fire substation totaling $1,337. Storm sewer construction from Avenue I and Twenty second Street to Dry Run Creek was funded with bids opening April 1. Police patrol cars and a surplus Air Force pump and truck were also to be purchased or evaluated.
Senator Johnson said the Senate will approve the Middle East resolution by a lop sided margin and that a final vote could occur today if possible. He noted developments including Israel's troop withdrawal raise urgency and warned of possible delay if a vote is not reached by 7 p.m.
Mrs. Dorothy Mae Mitchell of Baird Callahan County hospital nurse died today from injuries suffered when a car overturned fifteen miles north of Big Spring. Driver L. T. Foster of Big Spring was not seriously hurt. Mrs. Mitchell's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miller of Baird.
Elbert Honeywell of Fort Worth, 27, held on 10000 bond after FBI arrest for alleged unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He faces charges of murder ous assault and armed robbery in Florida case. Accused of pistol whipping a Quincy resident and forcing a 1700 check write.
Certified public accountant Russel Yorgesen reported Snyder's city finances are in excellent condition after reviewing the year ending September 1956. The audit found operating balances in all departments and praised accounting accuracy and efficiency, with recommendations to separate bond interest and sinking funds into individual accounts and to adjust insurance coverages.
Dr. Lester Nelson of New York City visited Snyder School to review the instructional improvement program. The Ford Foundation funded this year's grant for enhancements including experiments with closed circuit television for science instruction. Nelson is known for his Ford Foundation study of India’s secondary education.
An avalanche on Mt Ortles near Bolzano, Italy, swept away two German climbers and two Italian Alpine guides yesterday. The 12,792 foot peak triggered the tragedy on the icy slopes as rescue teams scrambled to reach survivors.
Premier Chou En-lai said China is willing to settle disputes with the United States through peaceful negotiations while determined to liberate Taiwan Formosa.
The Snyder city council unanimously annexed a 330 foot wide strip along the east side of the Big Spring highway from Fortieth Street to the Voss line opposite Canyon Drive In Theater. Property owners protested but no opposition remained. Mayor Harold Bennett said annexation protects city access and property values. G W Bigham noted private utilities already exist and city permits may be costly for his moved buildings. A second ordinance approved first reading annexes Second Highlands Addition from the south city limits to Towle Memorial Park and Canyon Theater lines, east to the new high school site, with Scott Browning Development Co. supplying all required utilities at no city cost.
