CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP the OGO 5 satellite designed like a praying mantis blasted off from Cape Kennedy aboard an Atlas Agena rocket at 8 06 am EST. It reached an initial transfer orbit over 100 miles above Earth and then moved into a 175 to 92 000 mile high ellipse deploying solar panels and instruments including magnetometers on long booms to minimize interference.

A portrait of Gen William Read Scurry, after whom the county is named, was placed on display at the courthouse this morning. Local artist Mrs Liz Bell painted the likeness from a photograph borrowed from the state archives in Austin and presented the work to the county. County Judge Sterling Taylor accepted the portrait amid a ceremony attended by historical committee members, county officials, and the mayor.

Averitt resigns Hermleigh post to lead Hart schools
Hermleigh Superintendent Ted Averitt announced his resignation at a board meeting. Youths Burned in Gasoline Fire at Farm Scene
Two Latin American youths aged 17 and 18 were burned when a match ignited gasoline at the Alfonso Wimmer farm near Pyron Cemetery around 12:45 a.m. The younger boy was seriously burned and taken to Cogdell Memorial Hospital. the older boy sustained lesser burns. Firemen extinguished the blaze. a 500 gallon gasoline tank was destroyed and a tractor shed minorly damaged. The hospital described the younger boy’s condition as fair with burns on about 25 percent of the body.

Eight cars collided on icy U S 90 near Marathon Brewster County Texas killing three people and injuring five. The victims were Edith Zahlen 65 of Long Beach California Cruz Esquival Silva 57 of Healdsburg California and Guadalupe Ramon Barrera four months of Redwood City California.
