President Carter said any final agreement on strategic arms limits will require a direct meeting with Soviet leader Brezhnev. He cited progress in Geneva negotiations and dismissed fears of Soviet missiles in Cuba resulting from Geneva talks.
Senate energy negotiators say they are close to breaking a three month deadlock on the natural gas pricing portion of President Carter's energy plan. Deliberations resume after Thursday's failure to reach overall agreement. Washington reports note obstacles remain. Workers could stay on the job to age 70 under a bill expected to pass Congress soon. federal employees could be kept on payroll indefinitely.

Snow and sleet blanketed Snyder and surrounding areas during the morning rush hour slowing traffic. Temperatures hovered around 22 degrees as one to three inches of snow were forecast across northern and western Texas with sleet in central regions and rain with thunderstorms in the south.
The January trade deficit stood at 2.4 billion as exports fell to 10.0 billion and imports rose to 12.4 billion. Weather at ports and a strong December buoyed the year’s total that topped 26.6 billion after a revised calculation.

Two men armed with a pistol and a shotgun robbed the First State Bank in an east Texas town. The heist occurred just before 9 a.m. as many residents were away at state basketball tournaments. The bandits fled south on State Highway 49 with an unknown amount of money.
Defiant farmers from several states gathered around Hidalgo County jail after arrest at the International Bridge. About 200 supporters spent a second night behind bars, voting to stay jailed and refusing to pay $18.75 to gain release. Governor Briscoe called lawfulness essential while Attorney General Hill mediated, noting charges may not be dismissed. Snyder High School issued second quarter diplomas to 24 graduates including Roxanne Bachus and Craig Daniel Martin. The local American Field Service chapter plans a March meeting at H and H Smorgasbord, inviting attendance at the Dutch treats breakfast.
The forecast calls for light snow north and light rain south today with freezing rain mixed with snow tonight. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches with locally heavier amounts may create hazardous driving across the Panhandle and South Plains today through Saturday. Temperatures range from the mid 20s north to mid 40s south and upper 60s west of the mountains with lows from the lower teens north to lower 30s south and mid 40s west mountains.
