Texas representatives trimmed a $135 to $105 per semester resident tuition increase for state colleges. An amendment by Rep. Tom Uher reduced resident rates from 9 to 7 dollars per hour, cutting projected two-year revenue to about 88 million dollars. An effort to keep resident tuition at current levels failed.

Marines To Leave Vietnam In Sixth Phase Withdrawals
The US Command announced four Marine units totaling 2 190 men will be withdrawn soon from South Vietnam. They began stand down and will move to Camp Pendleton California as part of the sixth phase of disengagement leaving about 21 000 Marines in country. Remaining Leathernecks are scheduled to depart by next June or July. The 2nd Battalion 11th Marine Regiment and Headquarters Battery of the 11th Marines are among the latest units ticketed for redeployment. The battalion arrived in Vietnam in May 1966.

Guerrilla release of U S agronomist after heart attack
American agronomist Claude L. Fly, 64, freed by Uruguayan guerrillas after a heart attack, was reported in apparently satisfactory condition by his physician. He and Dr Jorge Dighier were found blindfolded in an abandoned truck outside a hospital after nearly seven months in captivity.

US hints at new air strikes after Hanoi missiles fly over Saigon
North Vietnam fired SAM missiles at U S planes over South Vietnam in the war’s first cross border attack. American sources warned of retaliatory air strikes as heavy fighting continued in Laos. Eight helicopters were downed, one crew member killed, seven wounded and eight missing, raising total U S helicopter losses in Laos to 30 since Feb 8. A 37 foot SAM2 missile also fired from North Vietnamese territory targeted allied aircraft. Marines were committed to Laos boosting forces to 18 000. Continuous air strikes pounded the Ho Chi Minh trail across Laos and Cambodia as U S warplanes swept wide areas of Indochina.

Ban on US whaling threatens Del Monte fleet size
The Commerce secretary ordered a ban on continued whaling by Del Monte Fishing Co of San Francisco, affecting three 103 foot ships. Del Monte argues blue and humpback whales are protected and North Pacific stocks are not endangered. The eight month season was to begin April 1 before the ruling.
