Governor Bill Clements announced he will travel to Russia later this year and not China. He emphasized he never told reporters he would go to China, noting Texas Industrial Commission Executive Director Gerald Brown had proposed the China trip and he was considering it.
President Carter and Israeli Prime Minister Begin meet at the White House in hopeful bid to revive stalled peace talks. After a private session they planned further talks and an afternoon meeting to push toward a new Camp David summit, despite Begin’s hard arrival remarks.
In eastern Uganda jet planes and tanks clashed in a battle between Idi Amin loyalists and opponents at the Tororo battalion barracks. Mbale Hospital officials reported an undetermined number of dead and wounded.
Colorado City sheriff’s deputies investigate a twin engine Queen Air Beachcraft found abandoned at the C City air strip. No pilot or owner located. Scene evidence suggests the aircraft may have transported marijuana. Investigation continues.

The Western Texas College dinner theatre presents the comedy Never Too Late opening tonight to a sell-out crowd with additional shows this weekend and next. The cast includes Marca Parham, Robby Moore, Debbie Busciglio, and Rex Hopkins with a large supporting group as the family and neighbors. The production runs amid strong community support including local businesses.
