Police report a substantial lead from photos showing three women at a wedding near Locust Grove in relation to the three Girl Scouts slain at a summer camp. The women have been identified and are described as totally innocent of involvement.
The Federal Power Commission warned that even under normal weather next winter could see a natural gas shortage as bad as or worse than last winter. Gas availability depends on weather, emergency gas supplies, and customers switching to other fuels, the FPC said Wednesday.
J Loyd Parker Jr once admitted murdering his father in 1963 and faced a long delay before conviction and sentencing. A state district court judge calls his parole a classic example of how money can influence release, as he nears walking out virtually free.
Secretary of State Cyrus R. Vance will visit Peking August 22 to 26 as the Carter administration presses efforts to normalize relations with the Chinese government. State Department spokesman Hodding Carter declined to say whether an agreement would be reached on this trip.

Texas House members will hold public hearings July 7 and 8 to prepare for the July 11 special session on public school financing. Senate plans reported no hearings. Rep. Tom Massey said testimony from groups and individuals will help members decide on school finance proposals. The conference committee earlier produced a $900 million bill without a vote due to the deadline.
State Rep. Mike Ezzell travels to Washington D C to join a conference with the Department of Health Education and Welfare officials to discuss welfare reform proposals. Also attending are Sen. Bill Meir Raymond Vowell and Dickie Travis as Texas representatives.
Rainfall across Scurry County boosts soil moisture as 2.51 inches fell in mid afternoon and night, lifting three day totals to 3.58 inches and the year to 11.91 inches. County Extension Agent Billy Roach says the timing couldn’t be better for cotton rooting and pasture revival.

Tonight and Friday highs range from 92 to near 102 in Big Bend, with overnight lows 62 to 70 and some mountains in the upper 50s. Total precipitation this year accumulates to 11.9 inches in the region.
Snyder Jaycees and Jayceeettes start a kids driven effort to name the Kiddie Park in Towle Memorial Park. Ballots are in The Snyder Daily News on page 5 and at the Chamber of Commerce office. final name to be chosen by June 30.
