Thousands of remedial English students at San Antonio College use an IBM computer guided lab to correct errors and tailor pace. Lab director Vivian Rudisill notes improved writing, with about 75 percent earning C or better in freshman composition after computer assisted instruction.
On June 21 1788 New Hampshire ratified the U S Constitution making it the ninth state to do so. Other dated notes include Cyrus McCormick patent in 1834 and Tobruk fall in 1942.

The U S Supreme Court ruled 5 4 that states may fund church related colleges without breaking the separation of church and state The decision upholds Maryland 1971 program aiding private colleges and universities with limits The ruling allows 17 colleges including Notre Dame Loyola Baltimore and Mount Saint Marys to receive funds while forbidding seminary or theological schools from direct grants
Services were held at 10 a m for Mrs Henrietta Sturdivant 89 of Snyder with burial at Hillside Memorial Gardens. Born January 13 1887 in Dallas County she married Lee Sturdivant February 14 1904 in Scurry County. Surviving children include Thelma Gregory Faye Moore Annie Bicke Ivey Earl R L and Everett Sturdivant.
William A. Vaughan 62 of 605 Twenty-fifth St. died at 4 a.m. Sunday born Oct 9 1913 in Scurry County He spent his life in Snyder services were at Bell Seale Chapel with Rev Jim Terry burial Snyder Cemetery He married Sherry Loper in 1955 in Lovington NM She preceded him in death Sept 8 1972 Surviving are daughter Christie Vaughan and brother Louie A Vaughan Sr of Snyder.
At the Democratic National Convention in New York, Carter supporters won against major reform proposals as the Rules Committee rejected or sent most changes to study. Proposals to alter vice presidential selection and to require women as 50 percent of delegates were among those blocked.
The Spiegel Grove with 424 evacuees including 110 Americans left Beirut for Athens aboard a 510 foot LSD. President Ford ordered the sea evacuation dubbed Operation Fluid Drive and the mission included a fiveship amphibious group in reserve. Evacuee Vicki Alrey voiced mixed feelings as the relief voyage began.
Bertha Ann Powers 75 died at 4:32 a.m. today in Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Born December 4, 1900 she is survived by a sister Mrs. Willie Mae Prichell of Hot Springs Arkansas. Funeral arrangements are pending at Bell Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs Rosemary Davis 55 died at 8 am Sunday in Methodist Hospital Lub bock. Born June 27 1920 in Quapah Oklahoma she was active in American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries. Funeral 2 pm Wednesday Bell Seale Chapel with Rev Waylon Dowden officiating burial Hillside Memorial Gardens. Survived by husband Hank Davis and a stepdaughter grandson and other relatives.
In early returns from Italy’s parliamentary elections the ruling Christian Democrats led the senate count with 41 percent from 676 of 73 179 polling places. The Communists trailed with about 33 percent, as voters aged 18 to 25 were to decide the deputy chamber results.
