Fireworks funds Drive Aims For Six Thousand Ticket Sales

The SDN Column notes the July 4th celebration ticket drive led by Tommy LaRoux to fund the fireworks show and event costs. If 6,000 tickets are sold, Mickey Nunley of the Chamber will accept a special haircut designed by Bill Gilliland, with the payoff possibly becoming a major park attraction. Also in the issue, Mrs. Mozelle Johnson recalls a historic first sandstorm near Snyder and a 1902 flood on the Colorado River described by the Borden Citizen, highlighting early West Texas weather and commerce.

Nixon tours Middle East as arms aid pledged to Saudi Arabia

Nixon promised increased arms aid to Saudi Arabia and then visited Syria in a tense trip marked by a Syrian jet escort near his plane. He met King Faisal in Jidda and said the U S would raise regional security, while Syria and the United States eyed reestablishing diplomatic ties broken since 1967. The heat peaked at 93 degrees in Damascus.

Fiery Train Crash Blocks Highway 34 Near Snyder

A Santa Fe freight derailment 10 miles northwest of Snyder caused 18 cars to burn after cyclohexane shipments exploded. No injuries were reported as traffic was detoured along Polar Road and U S 84 while firefighters battled the blaze through Saturday noon.

Cowboy Artists Gather for TCA Show and Awards in Scurry County
